How would you look at the project of writing a history of the Centre?
This question is significant because your work has had a great impact on the writing of colonial histories with a critical stance to the very project of history and historiography. How would you react to the idea of tracing the past in the disciplinary mode? Similarly, as the Centre reflects on its past, what do you think are the possible ways in which its institutional biography could be written?
I look at this project with great enthusiasm but with a robust skepticism too. I am excited because this is an important project, but at the same time I am skeptical of the entire enterprise of history itself.
As a psychologist, I recognize the fact that everybody requires an ancestry – real or imaginary, genuine or fake. However, the modes by which such lineages are traced and constituted by communities in the realm of everyday experiences do not entirely depend on what is often called professional ‘history’. History is just one kind of engagement with the past, which absolutizes it in such a way that the inner world of human emotions, sentiments, motives and pains are erased to accommodate the larger impersonal forces or compulsions of history.
There are other possible constructions of the past – public memories, legends, myths and popular stories – which represent a very different world. Our engagements through them operate within a moral universe which reminds constantly about the relevance of remembering and forgetting. The markers of distinction and sameness, imaginations of

Past Prisons

...Past Prisons: The History of Incarceration Prisons are institutions designed to securely house people who have been convicted of crimes. These people are known as prisoners or inmates and are kept in an ongoing custody for a certain amount of time. The type of crime decides the length of the sentence. For some such crimes (i.e. murder) individuals may be sentenced to a lifetime imprisonment. In order for an individual to be incarcerated, they have to be accused of violating criminal law and then tried and found convicted in a jury of their peers. Then, the offender will be given a sentence for a specific punishment. Depending on the nature of the crime and whether or not it is a first offense decides if the punishment will be probation or incarceration in a prison or jail. According to historians, temples were used as sanctuaries before the concept of prisons evolved. They were used for the accused to flee to, but if they were unable to make it to one, they were to be punished by the accuser, which sometimes ended in death (Kosof, 1995, pp.19). The Encarta online Encyclopedia states: the existence of prisons originated in ancient Rome and Greece. The first place of confinement, Mamertine Prison, was constructed in the 7th century B.C. in Rome. It was mainly many tunnels of dungeons under the sewers. Our past experiences, in some respects, are still problems in the present. Throughout history, African Americans have struggled with equality. One question that still remains is: How can we (Americans) move forward while incorporating past experiences to overcome this ever pressing issue that has plagued the U.S. for so long? The answers might very well be a combination of understanding our past, while educating and changing the mentality of our nation. In this paper, I will focus on the racial discrimination and segregation the African American population suffered from, and fought to abolish throughout our history to the present day. I will cover events dating back to 1865, such as the “Black Codes”, and the “Colfax Massacre”, leading into events such as the Chicago Race Riots, to more current events that dated around the mid to late 1900’s such as the “Harlem Renaissance”, “The Freedom Flyers”, otherwise known as the Tuskegee Airmen of the 1940’s, and the “Civil Rights Act”. Ramsey II History 221-D23, Survey of American History I November 5, 2012 While addressing the Second Virginia Convention at the St. Johns Church in Richmond, Virginia Patrick Henry gave his call to arms speech. It was a call to action, the time for talk and half measures was over. “He stated there was no time for ceremony”.1 He wanted colonist to see how England did not see them as equal but as a servant. The Question he raised was it freedom or slavery? Patrick Henry felt so strongly on the subject of liberty just the act of not making this speech would be treason to him. “I should consider myself guilty of treason toward my country, and of an act disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings”1. He wanted his fellow Virginians to see how England was and would still oppress the colonies if they let them continue. He wanted them to see something had to be done about the way England was treating the colonies. He wanted them to know the truth. Lincoln devised the Ten percent plan, meaning those who were Confederates and had taken an oath of loyalty could rejoin the Union only if they had approved of the Thirteenth Amendment (abolishing slavery.) That being said most of the Southern states refused to do so, leaving that at a failed attempt. Thus the Wade-Davis Bill was brought about, it required fifty percent of a states white males take a loyalty oath to be readmitted to the Union. In addition the states were also required to give blacks the right to vote. Lincoln eventually pocket vetoed the bill and it ended up dying off (Pg. 447). Johnson though would think to reconstruct by pardoning those who went against the Union, and would swear to allegiance to the United States (except high ranking Confederates). Under provisional governors appointed by him, the Southern states held conventions that voided or repealed their ordinances of secession, abolished slavery, and (except South Carolina) repudiated Confederate debts (Pg. 448). 2. Future to Past

...Back to the Classroom Parents who went to school in the past were taught differently than the way we are taught today. Many were impecunious in the past; the students were pushed harder, helping them gain scholarships for college. There weren’t many distractions technologically speaking. History has been evolving; curriculum wasn’t as simple as it is now as it was back then. Teachers taught students with discipline and respect. Students in the past weren’t wealthy which caused them to work and be pushed even harder. For example, my mother had a rough childhood, because my grandparents weren’t wealthy at the time. She had to work really hard to keep her grades up. Students were expected by their parents to do well in school; gain scholarships and hopefully attend college. Students didn’t have the proper supplies to complete their course work such as pens and pencils. In the 1900s; students were not very motivated, the only motivation received was from pushing themselves to do better. Quandom students were way more disciplined then the minds of today. Whenever they caused problems they got whacked across the face for misbehaving. If they were to utter words during a lesson or during a time of silence they also got disciplined. When spoken to many students answered “yes and no mam”. When looking at how money and discipline worked in the past and comparing them to now and days we can obviously see a huge difference. There is no doubt that the primary purpose of schooling is to prepare students to function effectively in the world, and thereby to assist society to function effectively as well. We study the past in school not because students need to know a collection of old facts, but because history helps them understand how the world works and how human beings behave. Most people make them without even realizing it. In some way, shape or form, negotiation takes place in most of the decisions we make. The book, Getting Past No: Negotiating in Difficult Situations, by William Ury, presents many points, ideologies and a framework of preparation to negotiate with confidence and manipulate tough negotiations from conflicting arguments to joint problem solving. A few of Ury’s teachings, from the book, relate to personal approaches I have learned throughout my life, while the rest can be applied in my daily interactions at work and in my personal life. One of the key ingredients to an effective negotiation is preparation. Through my job, I have been introduced to the Lean Six Sigma process. As I first started reading Ury’s book, the first connection I made with the Lean Six Sigma training was not to fix yourself on a single solution or your original position.
