Methods Used to Diagnose a stroke
There are many different tests that can be carried out to help diagnose a stroke. The main way in which they are found is by using brain imaging so that they are able to pick up any visual issues. Brain imaging allows the doctors to understand whether the stroke was ischemic or hemorrhagic. It also allows them to determine how severe it was. Those who have suffered from a stroke must have a brain scan within 24hours to ensure the best diagnosis can be given to them allowing them to recover much better. Other tests are carried out to help the doctors realise the other smaller effects that the stroke has had upon the patient, these tests are smaller and easier to do but are no less important in allowing the stroke to be diagnosed.
Brain Imaging (CT and MRI)
CT and MRI scans are popular methods to carry out brain imaging. CT scan is rather like an X-ray which is more detailed and built up into a 3D image. An MRI scan creates an extremely detailed picture of the patient’s body. Both scans are useful in diagnosis however the particular one carried out depends upon how severe the doctors feel your stroke may have been. Both types of scans have their individual pros and cons as they are appropriate to reach different needs of the patient.
Blood Tests
Blood tests may be taken as these will tell us the person’s cholesterol and blood sugar levels, so that they are able to receive a wider understanding of the possible causes of the patient’s stroke.
Swallow Tests
Patients that have suffered from a stroke often have swallowing problems and as a result swallow tests are important to be carried out because if they are unable to swallow properly it could lead to inhalation of the food into the lungs causing a chest infection and/or pneumonia. The investigation was carried out in groups of 4 with individual participants doing different task, which was sorted randomly. The first take was measuring pebble size, to do so we measured the longest axis using a tape measure, which we used centimetres for the measurements. We found that this method was easy and there was little chance of doing it wrong. The site of these pebbles was chosen systematically as the pebbles were measured at every dip and crest along the beach. After systematically choosing the site, a quadrat was randomly placed and a participant would have to measure 20 pebbles within the quadrat. One participant would be measuring all 20 pebbles, this can get tedious, therefore the results at the start of the investigation could be more reliable and accurate than those collected at the end of the investigation due to lack of motivation. Furthermore as there were so many pebbles to measure within the allocated time period, this could have made some of the readings inaccurate however in contrast to this at each point there was 20 pebbles measured and none less. This is beneficial as we were able to collect all the data needed. Strokes dealing with stroke survivors the focus is always on the patient, how she will live, and the quality of her life. While dealing with these situations is the appropriate response it is also important to take into consideration that the patient is not the only one who had been affected by a stroke. ...We carried out our investigation on the River Harbourne in the south west of England in the county of Devon. The river is approximately 18km long which runs south easterly. It is situated amongst a rural catchment area with small settlements. Our investigation was looking into the downstream changes of the River Harbourne. Investigating how the width of the channel will increase we will use linear and stratified sampling. To collect this data, we used a tape measure to show the change in lateral erosion and how increasing lateral erosion is due to a decreasing gradient which therefore makes the sediment and river flow cut into the river side's widening the river. We measured this data in metres. We measured, using the tape measure, across the surface of the river from bank to bank. We found that this chosen method was simple to use and, the data we collected from it was easy to record. Although this proved to provide us with the width data, we found that the tape measure results could not be deemed as accurate as it had many limitations; the tape measure was not always torte therefore, not providing us with reliable data. US neurologists more often cited medicolegal factors as a potential influence on the decision-making process than Canadian neurologists (33% versus 10%, P0.001). I can honestly say that I didn’t ever really care to look into and study what a stroke was, or how people might recover from it until I met my wife. In what I know a stroke is a lack of oxygen to the brain for a period of time which will vary from person to person. During this time period where there is no oxygen flowing to the brain damage is being done. That damage will not fully present itself until the victim comes to and can attempt the regular day to day tasks and actions. I always assumed that strokes only happened to older people, possibly with high blood pressure or a poor way of living.
