The Cosby’s and Evan’s

With television shows such as the Cosby’s and Good Times gave people two different perspectives on black families which included hardship, values and family. There aren’t any two black families that can be any more different than the Huxtable’s and Evan’s. The Evans’s family showed how life was in one of Chicago’s poorest and dangerous apartment communities’ Cabrini–Green, while The Cosby’s showed a well off upper-middle class family living Brooklyn, New York. While both families showed many different scenarios to different family events it was how they handled them that made them so different. On the show Good Times, the Evan’s family struggles where those of a family coming up in a poor community who’s lives where consumed by getting out of the ghetto and being about to make to the next day. The Evan’s family struggles would include things like being able to find job once you had gotten fired or dealing with the fact that life was hard and that you had to work really hard to get out from up under the pressures of growing up poor. This show showed the true struggles of a family of this time period, for instance there was a show that showed the Evan’s family struggling to come up with the rent that was only seventy-four dollars. So the family comes up with many different avenues to come up with the money. James the father, decided to go out and hustle for the rest of the money by playing pool. Florida the mother decided to go down to the welfare office to sign up for welfare but was denied because James made to much money. The kids; JJ, Thelma and Michael coming up with an idea that involved Thelma being homeless and in need of money so people would give her money. Things like this set this family so far apart from the Cosby’s.
The Huxtable’s were the direct opposite of the Evan’s family; they were an affluent family in an…...

...continue well past his initial incarceration in Utah in 1976. In mid-1970, now focused and goal-oriented, he re-enrolled at UW, this time as a psychology major. He became an honor student, well-regarded by his professors. In 1971 he took a job at Seattle's Suicide Hotline crisis center. There he met and worked alongside Rule, a former Seattle police officer and aspiring crime writer who would later write one of the definitive Bundy biographies, The Stranger Beside Me. Rule saw nothing disturbing in Bundy's personality at the time, describing him as "kind, solicitous, and empathetic". After graduating from UW in 1972 Bundy joined Governor Daniel J. Evans's reelection campaign. Posing as a college student, he shadowed Evans's opponent, former governor Albert Rosellini, recording his stump speeches for analysis by Evans's team. After Evans's reelection he was hired as an assistant to Ross Davis, Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party. Davis thought well of Bundy, describing him as "smart, aggressive ... and a believer in the system." In early 1973, despite mediocre Law School Admission Test scores, Bundy was accepted into the law schools of UPS and the University of Utah on the strength of letters of recommendation from Evans, Davis, and several UW psychology professors. During a trip to California on Republican Party business in the summer of 1973 Bundy came back into the life of ex-girlfriend Brooks, who marveled at his transformation into a serious, dedicated......

Supreme Court Essay

...The Best Seat in the House “If you do not sentence me to death, I will escape from prison and murder every single one of you”, threatened John Louis Evans to the jury on April 26, 1977. Within less than fifteen minutes of discussion, the jury found him guilty and sentenced him to death by electrocution in the “chair”. Six years later, the first of three attempts of 1,900 volts of electricity were sent accelerating through John Evans's body. The final excruciating jolt boiled his brain and extremities in a horrifying manner, causing the nauseating stench of burnt flesh to quickly pervade the open air. John Evans's execution, which should have been only 30 seconds, lasted 14 minutes long. Whenever the phrase “death penalty” is brought up, two sides of extremists are riled up shouting for either approval or forbearance; thus creating a whirlpool of dissent and provocation. Many critics of this controversial issue may state that the moral aspects are inhumane and that the use should be discontinued from the United States; however, the crimes deemed worthy of capital punishment should not and cannot be overlooked simply because of a certain belief. The implementation of the death penalty should remain in practice to prevent heinous crimes and victimization of the innocent. Sometimes the “chair” truly is the best seat in the house. The supreme court case of Alabama vs John Louis Evans of 1977 shifted the viewpoint as to how the United States would approach......

Visual Media Paper

...Visual media plays a big part in American culture. Television itself has made an impact on what we look at as right and wrong in our culture. As a small child I can recall watching programs such as, Roseanne, The Cosby’s, and Full House to name a few. These programs represented what family life was or could be like and they were models of what Americans do or should live like. Programs like Saved by the Bell, or 90210, surely influenced teen behavior and sparked fads and fashion. We primarily idolized these figures and television and it became very much a part of who we were, and are today. Television also impacts the way we get together as a family. Certain programs such as American Idol, or a sports program, are known to bring groups of people together, whether it’s a weekday night in front of the television rooting for the best singer, or sitting in a crowded bar or pub shouting out obscenities at the opposing team. Reality Television is becoming a widely accepted past-time, which is a big influence on our culture. Everyone has that famous person or celebrity whose style represents them, or who they struggle to be like. Reality television is an invasion in the lives of real people, and as Americans I feel that we are totally consumed with others people business. Reality TV is a first class ticket into other people’s business. The social influence of visual entertainment can be negative, but it can also be positive as well. You have certain programming aimed towards......

Cosby Speech

...Anniversary Commemoration of the Brown vs.Topeka board of Education supreme court decision. Cosby’s purpose was to inform his audience of the shortcomings of the African-American community and persuade them to better themselves. He began his speech by acknowledging the sacrifices that were made for civil rights. He then compared those achievements to the devastating and poor statistics of school dropouts and bastard children found in the African-American community today. Cosby proceeded to attack the lack of parenting that occurs in lower middle class environments that, he says, leads to incarceration. He also addressed a lack of accountability in the community by saying “God is Tired of You”. Cosby chose to address his audience directly by using words like “you”and “we”. He made jokes throughout his speech to keep his audience engaged and used a level of diction that was accessible to his audience. He employed several calls to action, in which he encourages African-Americans to “Take the neighborhood back”, by dressing more conservatively and speaking proper English. He spoke about the illiteracy that is prominent amongst black athletes and multimillionaires, who found success despite their obstacles. Throughout his speech Dr. Cosby reinforced the message that the state of the black community is not due to what outsiders have imposed, but what black people have done to themselves. The tone of Cosby’s words was sincere and passionate. His word choice reflected his passion......

The Humor and Zeal of Bill Cosby and Jeff Foxworthy

...vulgarity to be funny (A+E Networks, 2013). He received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award in 2003 but twice refused the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor because of his objection to the profanity used at the first ceremony to honor the late Richard Pryor in 1998. He eventually accepted the award in 2009. (Bivens, 2009). Using a mostly deadpan delivery, Jeff Foxworthy paints a caricature of southern, rural, uneducated, white, working class Americans. During an interview with his pastor, Jeff Foxworthy spoke about his belief in the equality of men and stated, “When Jesus decided to pick people, he didn’t go to colleges, he went down and got guys off the fishing docks” (North Atlanta Church of Christ, 2007). On the other hand, Bill Cosby’s incredulous, satirical portrayals are universally human but his message is many times focused on racial issues. During an interview for Atlantic Magazine, he said, “My problem is I’m tired of losing to white people. When I say I don’t care about white people, I mean let them say what they want to say. What can they say to me that’s worse than what their grandfather said?” (Coates, 2008). Noticeably, standing up for their beliefs is a thing both Bill Cosby and Jeff Foxworthy are equally not afraid to do. Criticism of African Americans was not expected at an NAACP awards ceremony to commemorate the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, but that is exactly the sermon Bill Cosby dispensed. He condemned most every......

The Rape of Proserpine and a Modern Debate

...Proserpine and Hades. In the story, Hades– king of the underworld– is instilled with a love for Proserpine whom he kidnaps and takes to the underworld. Despite the relentless efforts of Cyane–a water nymph–to stop Hades from taking Proserpine, he forcibly takes her and breaks Cyane’s water pool to create a way into the underworld. Cyane later laments for what Hades has done calling it rape and withdraws into her pool and soon vanishes. Arguably, this anecdote exhibits some common characteristics of rape with respect to recent rape cases. For instance, the use of force as depicted in Ovid’s Metamorphoses alludes with current rape cases such as Bill Cosby’s rape scandal where he is alleged to have forced several women into submission. Another common trait in rape cases is male dominance. A critical analysis of this tale in relation with Cosby’s case will demonstrate the congruent nature of rape between past and present societies. Decisively, this analysis will present the impacts and harms of rape and destructive socio-cultural norms and why they should be outlawed if not met with stiff penalties. The Rape of Proserpine and Modern Debates: Summary Ovid’s Metamorphoses are filled with cultural allusions and especially ‘The rape of Proserpine.’ The main theme in this particular piece revolves around rape and male dominance as illustrated by the acts of Hades. Likewise, this piece features minor themes such as anger and turmoil that are common in a significant number of rape......

...better could be thought of at the time a business licence was obtained. Since the company’s inception (bat dau) in 1974, Ruffian Apparel had slowly expanded throughout Western Canada to a point where it had 68 locations and employed over 1,200 people. In British Columbia alone, Ruffian Apparel had 19 locations, the majority of which were in Vancouver and the surrounding area. Commonly found in local shopping centres and strip malls, with the exception of an outlet store located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Ruffian Apparel competed with such stores as Below the Belt, Bootlegger, Thriftys, Extreme, and West 49. Brands commonly sold in the store included Volcom, Quiksilver, Hurley, Billabong, DC and Element. REGIONAL MANAGER POSITION Evans’s new job duties were almost identical to those of his last job. He was responsible for overseeing the operations of all 19 B.C. stores, and his duties consisted of making key staffing decisions, conducting store shrinkage (hao hut )checks, monitoring the newly installed intranet system, taking care of cross-regional product transfers, and attending to workplace emergencies and issues as they arose. Although Evans was not technically in charge of the regional sales manager, he would supervise this position and work in tandem with the regional sales manager in an effort to monitor all 19 locations in a more efficient manner. The difference between the two positions related to sales (hence the title) as the regional sales manager was in......

Bill Cosby Is a Hypocrite

...filthy and dirty men. This is not true because it was later found out that he had many sexual encounters that were not from his wife. This means he never stop being a dirty and filthy man. Cosby shows that he is hypocrite because he says that he stopped seeing women when he was married, but that was not the case after people found out that he had rape many women behind his wife. To emphasize evidence that proves that Bill Cosby is a Hypocrite is when says that he protects their women. When Cosby says we protect our women and children he is referring to African Americas. The very same women that are African Americans were rape by Bill Cosby. Stacia L. Brown states that, “In a 2008 piece at The Atlantic, Ta-Nehisi Coates covered one of Cosby's “call-outs,” a nationwide moralizing tour that followed the initial “pound cake” speech. This particular call-out was held in Detroit. In it, Cosby waxes nostalgic for a bygone era when ‘We protected our women and protected our children.” Stacia Brown is implying here how Cosby has said that has protected their women. This is showing that he not protected the woman he did the opposite of protecting them. He raped the women and left them emotionally scarred for life. Cosby has said things in the past that have come back to hunt him now that the people know he has been lying all this time. In conclusion, Bill Cosby is hypocrite that is most likely to not be taken seriously when he speaks or gives out an idea. The reasons for......
