Is the Truck Empty, or Half Full?

...Is the Truck Half Empty or Half Full? Karinna C. Milans Bellevue University RCBC320 February 12, 2013 Introduction In the world of “big box” retailers, selling product at competitive, low prices is not the only thing that is required to be successful. These retailers also have to make sure that they have enough products available to satisfy customer demand. At the same time, retailers must be careful not to sit on their financial assets by overstocking their warehouse with unneeded merchandise. Proper inventory management is impacted by several factors including verifying on-hands, correct capturing at point-of-sale, effective merchandising, product ordering, and receiving of the product. The first four factors are directly controlled by the retailer itself. The final factor, receiving of product, can be affected by outside influences. The product sold by retailers arrives at their final destination via vendor trucking companies or parcel delivery companies like UPS. The cost of these delivery services can highly fluctuate based on the cost of fuel, and can have a negative impact on all parties involved including the customer. In this paper, I plan to discuss how the high cost of fuel affects the operation and capital of a major retailer such as Home Depot. First, let’s take a closer look at Home Depot by conducting a SWOT analysis. StrengthsLarge buying powerProprietary vendors | OpportunitiesOnline sales “Green” shipping options | WeaknessesLimited...

Oniomania in the Empty Days

...Sitting home and lonely can sometimes be boring, and depressing. To have company with other people or having an interest for sport or something that you can do, can probably beat the loneliness. Apparently being a shopaholic, or actually, an online shopaholic can beat the loneliness. The short story “Oniomania in the Empty Days” which is written by Beverly Lucey, deals with this woman named Mavis, who is lonely and addicted to one of the biggest online auction website in the world, Ebay.com. Mavis and her husband Darnell moved to Missouri a while ago and bought a new house there because Darnell got a new job. Darnell is not a big fan of Mavis’ shopping-on-Bay-thing. According to him, they can not afford all that stuff, because the still have not sold their old house yet, and now also with all Mavis’ shopping on eBay, it does not make it easier for him to afford two houses. However Darnell does not notice everything Mavis buys, because everything looked familiar for him, or he would think that it was things from her other life she lived. So while Darnell kept working to make money to afford two houses, he let Mavis do the paper stuff at home such as bills, which leads to that he actually never sees what Mavis uses the money on. Lost auctions on stuff that she felt belonged to her, nagged her. One of the reasons why Mavis cannot stop buying things on eBay, is because moving so much makes her feel incomplete. She wants to get the stuff she feels that belongs to her, to feel...

Running on Empty

...Running on EmptyWhen life seems to have no meaningBy Sara Debbie Gutfreund | She says that she is running on empty. She says that there is vast, useless space inside of her. She looks the same on the outside. But things are subtly falling apart. She is bored literally to tears even though her schedule is full. She can’t find meaning despite the rituals and beliefs that frame her days. She doesn’t want to do anything, but she does everything anyway. She can’t figure out where she went wrong when she was playing by all the rules.Lately she has become obsessed with the Wizard of Oz. As if she can’t find her own way home. As if she would like someone to offer her a new heart, a new mind, or perhaps just the courage to change. But then she looks at me with eyes that are tired and frustrated at the same time, and she says: “But then I remember that in the end the wizard is just a tired, old man with a fake voice.” She wonders though about the glittering, red shoes that Dorothy clicks together in the end. Maybe I should buy red shoes, she ventures. And she does. She buys red shoes and shiny, black shoes. She buys new, fluffy towels and perfume so sweet it makes her choke. But the emptiness is still there. Suddenly, everywhere she goes, she feels like she doesn’t belong. She is becoming a stranger in her own skin. Restless and exhausted at the same time. At night she can’t sleep, and during the day she can hardly keep her eyes open.Maybe you are depressed, I tell her. But no, she......

Empty

...We can see that when empty vessels make a loud sound when struck with something. But filled vessels do not make much sound. This proverb has a hidden level of meaning. There are people around us who are like empty vessels or like filled vessels. Empty vessels refer to empty headed people who are the most talkative and noisy. These people go on speaking continuously, but their speeches are meaningless. They boast that they can do this and that. Such people are not to be taken seriously. They talk much and are short of action. Filled vessels refer to people who talk less and do more. Every word uttered by them will be meaningful and so they have to be taken seriously. They talk sensibly and their words carry weight. They won’t boast, but are capable of doing everything that they say. They talk only when it is necessary. These people believe more in action than in words. Serious people do not preach. A man who has only a little knowledge boasts that he is a scholar whereas a really profound scholar would not boast of his scholarship. His scholarship is made known to others through his sensible words and good deeds. So it is said that empty vessels make the most sound. It could also be taken to mean that people who don't think a lot or reason make silly statements about subjects they know little or nothing about. Have you ever noticed the person in a group who seems to want to be heard above everyone else? They tend to talk loudly and want everyone to......

Empty Nest: Catastrophe or Transition

...midlife marriage that are transitioning to the empty nest. We identify the social aspects of the marriage relationship and the midlife issues most couples face. We look at those that grieve and those that rejoice, when their nest empties, as well as the characteristics of those prone to depression during this major life event. The biological, psychological and spiritual adjustments that take place are analyzed as well as the varied reactions that parents feel during this time of loss in their lives. Lastly, we discuss the role that the Christian counselor plays and celebrate with those couples who have newfound freedom and have reconnected as a result of their nest empting. Empty Nest: Catastrophe or Transition Midlife marriage is a comfortable and rewarding time to experience. Most couples have successfully matured and built a great life together. They have a lot to be thankful for and are proud of the family they’ve raised. One of the major adjustments that occur during this time is when the children they’ve raised reach maturity and leave home. This marks a new beginning for parents known as the empty nest. In the 70s, sociologists popularized the term ‘empty-nest syndrome” to identify parents, especially mothers who experienced depression and loss of purpose and identity when their children left the nest (Clay, 2003). Although women are mentioned as suffering the most when the nest empties, men suffer too. According to Dr.......

To an Empty Page

...Sonnet: “to an Empty Page” In Robert Pack's, "To an Empty Page," the speaker discusses death and its consequences regarding relief to show the author's purpose as a feeling of loneliness and depression. He does this with the use of an echo sonnet form, foreshadowing within the title, and through the use of emotion evoking pathos. Pack's use of a sonnet for reveals his feelings and emotions toward love, which sonnets are normally about. Readers can feel the raw emotion that Pack reveals in his discussion regarding the speakers possible death and loss of love, thereafter. In addition, the fact that he wrote an echo sonnet aids in the author’s purpose because it allows the reader to be aware of the words meant to be emphasized. Along with its emphasis, the echo, in some cases, seems to answer a rhetorical question made by the speaker. For example, “what’s the end of my life’s long disease? Ease,” (line 7). Within this quote, the speaker is relaying his belief that the only way to relieve himself of life’s burdens is through death. Pack exposes his true feelings of loneliness, which in sonnet form allows readers to sense his passion. The title, "To an Empty Page," Pack eludes that his poem is dark and filled with sadness. A breakdown of the title shows that Pack's diction with using, "To," was as if the speaker was sending his sonnet to somebody; as if he were talking to an imaginary listener. But contrast to that idea, he is sending his sonnet to, "an Empty Page," ......

Empty Nest Syndrome

...Empty nest syndrome is defined as "the experience that relates to parents' feelings of unhappiness, worry, loneliness, and depression resulting from their children's departure from home" (Feldman, 2011p. 521). Some parent’s find this time very challenging, mainly mothers because they have raised their children and cared for them most of their lives and now it has come to an end. Some parents find it rewarding that their children have left the nest, because they have more leisure time for such things as physical and psychological energies like community and recreational activities” (Feldman, 2011p.521). I think parents or caregivers should find outlets before their child or children leave the home, that way they have something to keep them distracted. Empty nest syndrome can weigh very heavily on a marriage, the husband and wife may be used to a routine and this may knock their relationship off track. Being said maybe the couple did not spent as much time together because the child or children took up most of the mother’s time. I have seen several marriages where the couples were not use to seeing each other so much verses others that wanted to spend more time together. Some men feel a loss for their children leaving also, maybe as much as the mother. "One survey of fathers whose children had left home found that although they showed signs of happiness a quarter of the father felt unhappy deep down inside"(Feldman, 2011,p.521). Parents should spend as much time as they can......

Empty

...Empty Fake happiness is still the worst sadness. It's so sad to think about how many beautiful people are living every day hating themselves. First, it starts off on insecurities, of not being good enough for a certain someone, for your family, for the society. Then, the next thing you know is you are depressed. Depression doesn't exempt anyone, whether you are a poor person that has nothing, or you are rich that could get everything in just a snap of your fingers. Depression is like drowning but not being able to save yourself, so you just kind of gave up and let the deep, dark ocean take you. It feels like you're too sad to cry and too tired to sleep, and you just feel nothing. You have this empty feeling in your chest, and no matter what you do, you can't fill it out. Sometimes, the emptiness you feel is just too much and there's only so much a person could take, and then they just give up. Now, hurting yourself thinking you deserve it is such a hard thing to stop. It's like a drug, it takes you away from reality, and the next thing you know, you're in too deep, and it's too late to go back. So before this unhealthy habit starts, we need to prevent it from happening to us, to our loved ones. People are like pieces of paper. Once you tear them apart, you can't fix them. No matter what you do or say they will never be how they once are. Depressed people lack love from the people around them, so they just make their own world where they could be happy, blocking the people......

Half Empty Half Full

...HALF FULL OR HALF EMPTY As with many of his audit staff counterparts across the country, Bill Turner spent the last day of the year performing inventory observation procedures. His assignment that December 31 included taking test measurements at a client’s grain elevator in a small prairie community. Bill had measured grain invento-ries on two previous audits and was the in-charge accountant on this audit. Bill’s observations of the quantity of grain in the elevator fell ten percent below the client’s records. Bill’s attention was drawn to the discrepancy in the two measurements of what was in the elevator because, in his judgment, such a gap was significant enough to be material. The resulting difference between the inventory as reported by the client and the audited amount was enough to cause a significant drop in net income. Bill documented his findings in the working papers and proposed an adjusting entry for the difference. Upon delving further into the matter, Bill determined that a discrepancy in the grain inventory had also surfaced two months previously. The quantity of grain, as reported by a government inspector at that time was also lower than that on the client’s records. The difference in the inventory valuation, however, was not as great as that in Bill’s tests. Still, no adjustment to the client’s records was made. This information was also documented in the working papers. Prior to discussing the discrepancy with the client, Bill told Greg, the......

Half Empty or Half Full

...Half Full or Half Empty Bill is facing an ethical dilemma due to his engagement partner’s inappropriate behaviour in preparing the working inventory documentation. The information is no longer accurate as Greg has overlooked using the updated figures from Bill and Bill’s measurements presented a discrepancy of 10% between what he observed and the client’s book value. Bill has also discovered that this is not the first time this discrepancy has been discovered. At a previous audit carried out by government officials, the same discrepancy was highlighted but again, not reflected in the client’s documentation. Bill faces several ethical issues here, specifically with his code of conduct from here onwards. If Bill fails to act, his integrity, objectivity and professional judgement could be called into question. Also, as an auditor, he is accountable to act in the interest of the user of the information (not specifically the client). As an auditor, he should comply with relevant professional ethical requirements relating to this audit engagement. As stated CAS/ISA 200.24-25 requires auditors to obtain enough evidence to justify opinions, the information has to be reliable and relevant (not just sufficient). He should obtain reasonable assurance that the financial statement taken as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Bill also needs to demonstrate competence, objectivity and due professional care in this Operational Audit. Greg is......
