Executive Summary
This report provides an analysis and evaluation of a fleet of trucks and loaders to meet the production requirements of an open pit mine. The method of analysis was first to determine the cycle time for each truck which led to calculating the amount of each dump truck necessary to meet the waste removal requirement of 70 Mt/pa. Secondly, an expected cost for ten years was conducted on each Komatsu dump truck and cross analysed to determine the most cost efficient option. It was found that the Komatsu 930E-4 had the least expected cost over the ten years. Then cross analysing, each loader with the Komatsu 930E-4 truck, it was determined that the Hitachi EX8000-6 was the most efficient loader for a fleet of Komatsu 930E-4 trucks. Once these were completed, a full haul truck cycle time and expected cost analysis for each year was calculated. It revealed that thirty four Komatsu 930E-4 dump trucks were needed for a single Hitachi EX8000-6 loader. However, the above analysis was limited by the fact that it didn’t account for truck and loader break downs. By taking into account a 10% threshold on the number of trucks and loaders needed it gave some costs accounting for time where not all trucks are operational. This analysis yielded that a fleet of thirty seven Komatsu 930E-4 dump trucks and two Hitachi EX8000-6 loaders would be best suited for the Kangaroo Mining Corporation. The expected costs for both loaders and dump trucks were calculated (refer to table 1.9) and showed that the average expected cost per year of hauling and loading would be $142 613 457/pa and $11 869 288/pa respectively. Furthermore, the average expected cost per tonne of hauling and loading would be $2.04/t and $0.17/t respectively.

...Why I want to be an Engineer There have been different reasons at different stages of my life why I developed a passion for the engineering profession. It started from a youthful age watching my father, who was a mechanical engineer and wanting to emulate him when I got to adulthood. I liked the way he talked about his occupation with great excitement. He tended to travel a lot but also had time to spend with his family. I was impressed with his knowledge of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. He was always helping my older brother with his calculus assignments even though he had been through school for a long time. The engineering profession afforded my father with the resources to provide for his family and to do some philanthropic work as well. There was always something technological being discussed with his friends. In my early years when I wanted to be an engineer, it was always because I just wanted to be like my father, not until I got into school. When I started school, I realized I was very interested in mathematics and the sciences. The tougher the subject, the greater satisfaction I had at the end of the term when I succeeded. I loved working in the science labs and learning how science works. I always wanted to challenge myself with an occupation that will keep me on my toes, so engineering being my first love was an obvious choice. It shows that academic performance as a dependent variable is related to the dependent variables, which are students’ personal motivations, socio-economic status, classroom settings and school background. The first dependent variable is former school background, which was conceptualized as ownership of former school, (public or private). That is the type of school a student attends is likely to contribute to their academic performance of the student in future. ...in engineering, ethical issues occur almost all the time. these issues include obstacles that may or may not be intentional. as engineers we need the mathematics and sciences we take the time to learn, then we use the materials to solve these problems effectively and accurately to make life easier. i couldn't imagine how difficult it would be to build a real tower considering how difficult it was making a wooden one. during the process of building this tower, i had to design and draw to exact measurement a tower that i believed would be strong enough to withstand more weight than the rest of the towers created by my classmates. that was the easy part. i then had to cut the pieces of wood i would need for each wall to the exact size then frame it and glue it all together four times until they dried, using my geometry skills to make forty-five and ninety degree angle cuts. After the waiting process was over i then created another part of the tower called the beams which is basically extra support for the tower. I used a basic double V design to allow maximum strength for the tower and i did this nine times, three for each floor. I then had to pin the entire tower together, slide the beams in, glue the beams while they were in the tower, and place triangular floors while it was still drying. so after all the hard work was done, i simply finished gluing all the walls together and then i added a coating of super glue to the tower and i was finished.
