How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents

...novel and often tore the characters apart for one another. Alvarez gives many examples throughout the novel that depict the female characters as trying to both challenge and conform to the tradition gender roles expected of them by their traditional Dominican heritage. Sofia (Fifi), the youngest of the sister challenged and conformed at times many of the traditional general roles expected of her by her patriarchal culture. It can be argued that Fifi assimilated to the American society’s gender roles quicker and easier than her sisters because she was the youngest when they moved to America she only really experienced her traditional Hispanic culture when going back to spend summers with her extended family. During one of Sofia’s extended stays in the Dominican Republic she did conform to the gender roles that were expected of her there, much to the disapproval of her sisters. “We [the other sisters] begin to get the long view, and it’s not so pretty. Lovable Manuel is quite the tyrant, a mini papa and mami rolled into one. Fifi can’t wear pants in public. Fifi can’t talk to another man. Fifi can’t leave the house without his permission. And what’s most disturbing is that Fifi, feisty, lively Fifi, is letting this man tell her what she can and cannot do”(120) Sofia was always ready to assert her independence and challenge boundaries of traditional gender roles while in America with her parents and sisters. When Sofia was with Manuel her mother sent her to Dominican......

The B-29 Superfortress

...United States, landing in Washington D.C. The B-29 also carried Chuck Yeager and the Bell X-1 rocket plane aloft for the first supersonic flight in 1947. A few B-29s were even used as flying television transmitters for the Stratovision company. The B-29 was the beginning of a series of Boeing-built bombers, transports, tankers, reconnaissance aircraft and trainers including the B-50 Superfortress, (the first aircraft to fly around the world non-stop) which was essentially a re-engined B-29. Boeing produced 3,970 of the B-29 Superfortress with production ending in 1946. The last B-29 Superfortress in squadron use retired from service in September 1960. Currently only one B-29 Superfortress, Fifi, is airworthy today. It is owned by the Commemorative Air Force, currently based at Addison, Texas. Fifi tours the United States. and Canada, taking part in air shows and offering flight experiences. Works Cited B-29 Superfortress History. Database Implementation

...would you create for the above database? Show how you would create them. * What secondary indexes would you create? Show how you would create them. [5 marks] (c) Explain the difference between Hash indexes and B+-tree indexes. Q4 You are given the following information so that you may design a database for a customer who trains dogs: The company wishes to set up a database dealing with puppies, kennels, and tricks performed by the puppies. The following table contains information, which is included as unnormalized Data Items for Puppies. In this original list of data, each puppy's description is followed by a list of tricks the puppy has learned. Some might know ten tricks, some might not know any. To answer the question, "Can Fifi roll over?” we need first to find Fifi's puppy record, then scan the list of tricks associated with the record. As you can guess this is awkward, inefficient, and extremely untidy. Your job is to design the Puppy Database for the Company. Unnormalized Data Item Comment Puppy Number Every puppy gets a unique number. Puppy Name Kennel Code Kennel Name Kennel Location Trick ID 1...n Trick Name 1...n We'll add a row for every trick Trick Where Learned 1...n Learned by every puppy Skill Level 1...n a) List out all the functional dependencies and identify the primary key b) You are required to take the above unnormalized data and normalize it to 3NF....

Business Law Components

...by Reference is a very helpful way to make a contract clear and sufficiently definite. When you refer to some outside document in your contract and by doing so you make that outside document a part of your contract. Page 263 example “Requirements Contract” – I will buy all the ‘x’ components that I need to make my product (x can be radios, tires, whatever is needed is needed to make the product) “Output Contract” – I’ll buy however much you can make / entire production Requirement and Output contracts are indefinite in nature. They’re very common in manufacturing. The offer has to be communicated. Until it is communicated, it is not a valid offer. (Example: If you have no knowledge of the offer, you can’t claim the award (Fifi dog)) Offer is only effective when it is received. Offer is not effective when it is mailed, only when received. Termination of Offers: (pool) 1) Revocation (by offeror) 2) Rejection (by offeree) 3) Counter Offer (by offeree) 4) Lapse of time 5) Death or disability of either party 6) Subsequent illegality Offeror  offer  Offeree The phrase “the offer is on the table” means the offeror has made the offer to the offeree. If any of the above 6 happens, the offer goes away. Revocation means the offeror pulls back or retracts or withdraws the offer. General rule: The offer may be revoked at any time prior to its acceptance. Rejection means when the offeree says no. IF the offeree says no, the offer goes away.......

The Secrets of the Brain

...saw your mother. And then what happens is, there's a blow to your head, damaging the cortex, allowing these latent sexual urges to emerge, flaming to the surface, and suddenly and inexplicably you find yourself being sexually aroused by your mother. And you say, "My God, if this is my mom, how come I'm being sexually turned on? She's some other woman. She's an impostor." It's the only interpretation that makes sense to your damaged brain. 4:19This has never made much sense to me, this argument. It's very ingenious, as all Freudian arguments are -- (Laughter) -- but didn't make much sense because I have seen the same delusion, a patient having the same delusion, about his pet poodle. (Laughter) He'll say, "Doctor, this is not Fifi. It looks exactly like Fifi, but it's some other dog." Right? Now, you try using the Freudian explanation there. (Laughter) You'll start talking about the latent bestiality in all humans, or some such thing, which is quite absurd, of course. 4:52Now, what's really going on? So, to explain this curious disorder, we look at the structure and functions of the normal visual pathways in the brain. Normally, visual signals come in, into the eyeballs, go to the visual areas in the brain. There are, in fact, 30 areas in the back of your brain concerned with just vision, and after processing all that, the message goes to a small structure called the fusiform gyrus, where you perceive faces. There are neurons there that are sensitive to faces. You can call it......

...1971 after the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970. Few nations around the world knew about the conditions of civilians in that war, therefore France set a team of French Doctors who collaborated with the French Red Cross to work in hospitals in Nigeria. The doctors then witnessed all the atrocities in that war and therefore decided that a new organization must be formed which that would ignore political/religious boundaries and prioritize the welfare of victims. Doctors without borders has operated humanitarian missions the following countries: Nicaragua – The organization provided relief work and medical support to earthquake victims in the year 1972. Honduras – Deployed in 1974 to provide humanitarian aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Fifi Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia during the Vietnam War when millions of Cambodians migrated to Thailand to avoid mass killings between 1975 and 1979. Lebanon – During the Lebanese Civil War (1976-1984) Doctors without borders treated Christians and Muslims soldiers alike and helping whichever group required most medical help. Apart from the above the organization has also operated in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Ethiopia, San Salvador, Sudan, Liberia, and Iraq. Doctors without borders has ongoing missions in the continent of Africa where it works in the prevention and cure for diseases such as cholera, measles, polio, sleeping sickness, Bubonic plague, Ebola and others. Hurricane Mitigation

...is the most vulnerable activity (ECLAC/UNEP, 1979). Hurricanes have disastrous effects on banana crops in particular. During Hurricane Alien, in August of 1980, Saint Lucia suffered US$36.5 million in damage, with 97 percent of the banana plantations destroyed. In St. Vincent 95 percent, and in Dominica 75 percent, of the banana plantations were ruined (Earthscan No. 34a, 1983). Damage to the tourism industry is more difficult to quantify since it includes many other economically identifiable sectors such as transportation and hotel services. Crop statistics rarely account for long-term losses. The increased salinity in the soil due to the storm surge can have detrimental effects on production in subsequent years. For example, Hurricane Fifi decreased production in Honduras by 20 percent the year it occurred, but in the following year production was down by 50 percent. How much of this reduction was due to the increase in salinity is unclear, but it is known that salt destroys vegetation slowly. Once the risk posed by hurricanes is understood, specific mitigation measures can be taken to reduce the risk to communities, infrastructure, and economic activities. Human and economic losses can be greatly reduced through well-organized efforts to implement appropriate preventive measures, in public awareness and in issuing timely warnings. Thanks to these measures, countries in the region have experienced a drastic reduction in the number of deaths caused by hurricanes.......
