Flaws Behind “The Damned Human Race” Flaws appear within Mark Twain’s essay, “The Damned Human Race.” First of all, one flaw stems from his use of dicto simpliciter. This is supported when Twain states: “Since the Moral Sense has but one office, the one capacity-to enable man to do wrong-it is plainly without value to him” (Par.17). From this excerpt, Twain only focuses on the wicked and unfavorable aspects of the moral sense and excludes the favorable aspects of it, such as how it enables people to help others. Such assumptions seem flawed, as they fail to provide a qualified generalization. Another flaw in Twain’s essay is his use of ad ignorantiam. In the essay, Twain writes: “[Human vermiform appendix] has no value; it cannot perform any useful service” (Par.23). Here, Twain illustrates a series of human attributes that are useless or unimportant; hence, he concludes that humans are not important. His statement is not convincing because it lacks evidence.
In other words, he makes his assumption simply on the basis that it has not been proven false. Some people might argue that Twain’s essay is not flawed. This seems viable, as many people note his work is a satire. In fact, “One blessing inherent in good satires is the ability to dangle glittering extremisms in front readers” (Koonman 117). Therefore, it can be inferred that Twain effectively uses satire to engage the readers in his argument. However, throughout the piece, he overwhelmingly focuses on the inferior side of humanity and barely includes the favorable qualities that human possess. ...Race For centuries and centuries, people have needed to categorize things to make them more real and palpable. That is why they categorized food, animals, plants and so many other things. Why would we not also classify humans according to different physical or cultural traits ? Is There a Superior Race

..."Is there a superior race?" This was one of the questions posed, and an episode, by Through the Wormhole. Currently it doesn't appear that there is. The posit from the scientists presented during the episode is that on a biological level there is no more room, in humanities current state of evolution, to improve mentally. This is supposedly because for the brain to improve, it would require much more space and energy than is readily available. For these kinds of changes to take place births would become too difficult or infancies would last significantly longer. These scenarios would make the likelihood of their fruition highly unlikely. All creatures share one thing in common; reproduction. ...Unit 5 10/21/13 Intel engineers discovered a flaw in the floating-point math subsection of the Pentium microprocessor. Dr. Thomas professor of mathematics discovered the bug. He then tried to send intel a email about it and was waiting for a response. When there was no response after a few days he then went to the internet to spread the word of the bug he had found. Posting it on the internet the word got out fast and when the word got back to Intel they said “it was minor and not even a erratum”. The New York Times then wrote a peace on the matter and Intel resulted in a $500 million charge against Intel’s 1994 revenue. Intel thought that the error would not affect many people and then decided not to tell anyone outside of the company because of the few people that did find out they lost billions of dollars and people thought of them to be hiding a sinister secret and to be untrustworthy. If the same thing was to happen again today I would hope they would respond to the emails and not just tell them they will just fix the ones that people can prove that there is a flaw with it. I hope they can handle it better before they let it get out the way they did before and try to fix it before it will cost billions of dollars to fix. ...Mistake Problem Statement When Thomas Nicely, a mathematician at Lynchburg College in Virginia, first went public with the fact that Intel's new Pentium chip was defective Intel admitted to the fact that it had sold millions of defective chips, and had known about the defective chips for over four months. Intel said its reasoning for not going public was that most people would never encounter any problems with the chip. Intel said that a spreadsheet user doing random calculations would only have a problem every 27,000 years, therefore they saw no reason to replace all of the defective chips. However if a user possessed a defective chip and could convince Intel that his or her calculations were particularly vulnerable to the flaw in the defective chip then Intel it would supply those people with a new chip. This attitude of 'father knows best' fostered by Intel created an uproar among users and owners of the defective chips. Six weeks after Mr. Nicely went public, IBM, a major purchaser of Pentium chips, stopped all shipments of computers containing the defective Pentium chips. Intel's stock dropped 5% following this bold move by IBM. IBM's main contention was that it puts its customers first, and Intel was failing to do this. While race revolves around the idea of biological traits, ethnicity is based on a shared cultural heritage. ...The Damned Human Race (Criticism) Reading this article of Mark Twain about the Damned Human Race, I was quite intrigued about how the writer speculated his own theory (about why humans should be in the lowest stage of the chain) although at some point, I find it precise. Excluding its positive side, he settled comparison between the cruelty of humans and the innocence of other wild animals. He used scientific method to conclude such. Based on his experiments, he proved that humans became more hesitant; that humans are more wild and raucous; and that humans are more likely chaotic than any other animals. Analytically citing, he conducted random experiments comparing the so-called lower animals to us humans. He used sarcasm to show that society is more backwards than of what most individual consider. He as well established the descent of humans from the lower animals. Opposing to this matter, I consider certain things proving that humans should not be in the bottommost of the chain.
