Healthcare management and leadership
Managing employees and leading employees can be two in the same but often managers are not leaders. My view is that leaders are born and not taught. [In India, M.K. Gandhi inspired millions of people to fight for their rights, and he walked shoulder to shoulder with them so India could achieve independence in 1947. His vision became everyone’s dream and ensured that the country’s push for independence was unstoppable. The world needs leaders like him who can think beyond problems, have a vision, and inspire people to convert challenges into opportunities, a step at a time (Nayar, 2013).]
In the military there are many requirements such as time in your position, time in the military, schools and physical fitness. I have said more times than I can count that just because you can run two miles in 13 minutes does not qualify a person to lead soldiers into combat. That statement can be changed slightly for the healthcare industry and will be applicable. Just because a person has a degree or certificate, does not mean that they are qualified to lead employees in a hospital environment. A person can be an effect manager and possess the ability to lead. Only the managers with the ability to influence as well will make the company, their subordinates and themselves a thriving success.
In conclusion, having the ability and knowledge to lead and manage your employees is an important key to everyone's success. The sad reality is that more often than not, managers do not know how to lead and are never mentored by their superiors on how to lead. They may be the most intelligent person with multiple levels of degrees but if they cannot mentor and lead, then their employees wouldn't follow them to the break room. Powerful leadership skills are needed by all nurses – those providing direct care to those in management positions. Anyone who is looked to as an authority or who is responsible for giving assistance to others is considered a leader (Mahoney, 2001). This assignment provides an avenue for competent nurse managers who also must have the necessary leadership skills to inspire and empower followers and team members. Concepts such as management and leadership will be defined as well as the differentiation between them. A steady and consistent cash flow can help improve the hospitals borrowing power, which will increase and maintain the income level. Capital Shortage My challenge was to decide on the best strategy to solve the cash flow problem at Elijah Heart Center (EHC). In addition, I had to implement two measures to achieve a cost saving target of $750,000 for the first quarter. In order to cover the remaining shortfall, I recommended “Reducing Proportion of Agency Contracted Staff.” Implementing this strategy will reduce costs drastically without any significant change in revenue. By reducing the number of contracted staff, EHC can save money on the premiums and management fees, which are paid to the agency in lieu of providing personnel. This implementation will reduce cost drastically, due to the hospital paying twice the amount to contracted staff, then personnel employed by the hospital. My next recommendation is changing the skill mix by hiring unlicensed assistive personnel. This is a good option for saving cost in the long run. The “Revenue and Expenditure Projections” indicates cost will increase in the beginning but it will increase the revenue significantly in the following months. Furthermore, this will save the hospital $811,249 by the first quarter, which will exceed the target set.
