How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

...HOW TO USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER What would happen if a fire broke out in your home or business? Would you know what to do or where the fire extinguisher was located? Over the past couple of months, there have been a high number of fires in homes and businesses. Were there any fire extinguishers and did the personnel know how to use them? Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher could save your home, business or more importantly your life. Every home should have at least one fire extinguisher and all businesses in the Hampton Roads area are required to have them. Knowing where they are located is just as important as knowing how to use them. In homes they should be located in the kitchen under the cabinets or mounted on the wall. In businesses they are located at all exit doors that are at least 75 feet apart. The size and type of extinguishers will vary depending on the type of business and the size of the space covered. The most common type of extinguishers used is an “ABC” extinguisher. It is used on A, B and C classes of fires. Fires are classified by the materials they burn; for example: Class A or alpha fires are any material that will leave an ash. Class B or bravo fires would be fuel, grease or flammable liquid fires. Class C or Charlie fires are electrical or electronic fires. There is also a Class D or delta fire which consist of special hazards such as; titanium, magnesium or any material that will produce its own oxygen. The way......

How to Master a New Skill

...BA 250 HBR Review #4 – How to Master a New Skill This was a fantastic article on self-management written by Amy Gallo. She is absolutely correct when she says that "In a fast-moving, competitive world, being able to learn new skills is one of the keys to success. It's not enough to be smart — you need to always be getting smarter." With modern time’s rapidly changing technology, it isn’t enough anymore to just be smart, you have to keep up with the changes and advancements or you’ll be left behind. Ms. Gallo made several excellent points in her article, and I completely agree with her. Checking to see if you’re ready to work on a new skill is very important. This new skill must be attainable by you, and you must have the time and resources to commit. Not everyone has the time and skill required for an advanced degree or specialization. Picking a new skill relevant to your current career is also excellent advice. People are unlikely to get extra compensation or support from their superiors for skills unnecessary for their position. Knowing how you learn the best is also very important. Some people are visual, and others are hands-on learners. One of the most important points in Ms. Gallo’s article is to work with a mentor. Working with someone who already possesses the skills you seek to attain and can give you detailed and honest feedback is invaluable. Also, starting small and focusing on one or two small skills at a time can build......

...How to improve parenting skills Do you think parenting skills will destroy a child’s life? Yes, the young generation of the day are always getting in trouble from day to day for example cybercrime, discipline problem, playing truant at shopping mall or cybercafé. Parents should have the responsibility to take care and teach their children. Parenting is very important for mental and physical development of the young generation. So, parents should be required to improve their parenting skills by spending quality time with their children, playing a vital role and are banned from smacking their children. Firstly, parents should spend more quality time with their children. According to Porpora (2012), “Oftentimes parents fail to be actively engaging with their children”. This is because their children stay with the babysitters or day-cares more to with their parents especially when their parents are at work. Considering this, parent must be involved in a schedule which includes children’s time with parents. The parents can plan the daily timetables carry out some activities with their children. For example, their parents can tell the bedtime story or can make the cookies together with their children (Hoch, 2012). Consequently, spending time with children is one of the ways to improve parenting skills. Furthermore, parents have to play a vital role in their children’s life. Parents should shape their children to avoid falling into unhealthy practices (Bernama, 2012).This is......

How Nurses Use Math

...first skill that comes to mind when you think about a nursing career. Math is a vital part of nursing and is used in a variety of ways throughout the average day. Nurses must obtain reliable data and calculations to prevent, diagnose and treat medical problems. A clear understanding of fractions, ratios and algebraic equations and the metric system is essential to keeping patients healthy and alive. Vital signs -- temperature, pulse rate, breathing rate and blood pressure -- serve as our bodies’ dashboard indicators. Nurses must use math when they check a person’s vital signs. One important vital sign is body temperature. The normal body temperature for a person is about 98.6 degrees. A high temperature tells a nurse that a person has a fever. When you have a fever, it often means that your body is fighting some sort of infection or illness. One of nurse’s most important jobs is to make sure to give the right doses of medication to the right patient. The nurse reads a patients chart, which contains the doctor’s orders, including what kind of medicine to give and how much to give. A nurse must make sure to read the name of the medication correctly as well as the strength of the medicine the doctor has ordered. This is important particularly if the conditions for determining the dose depend on the patient's weight, blood pressure or glucose level. Medication strengths can be measured in metric units, such as grams, milligrams, liters, and milliliters. Some nurses use math......

How to Improve Communication Skills?

...How to improve communication skills? Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation, enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish. As simple as communication seems, many of us experience difficulties connecting successfully with others Being fluent in English is important, considering it is the universal language of business communication. For those looking to improve their skills, here are a few tips. 1: Listen 2: Read 3: Improve Your vocabulary 4: Prepare for small talk 5: Make mistakes 1: Listen Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. How well you listen has a major impact on your job effectiveness, and on the quality of your relationships with others. We listen to obtain information. We listen to understand. We listen for enjoyment. We listen to learn. Given all this listening we do, you would think we'd be good at it! In fact most of us are not. Depending on the study being quoted, we remember between 25% and 50% of what we hear. That means that when you talk to your boss, colleagues, customers or spouse for 10 minutes, they pay attention to less than half of the conversation. This is dismal! Turn it around and it reveals that when you are receiving directions or being presented with information, you aren't hearing the whole message either. You hope the important parts are......

How to Use Twitter for Business

...connect with another. How Does Twitter Work? Twitter users–often called Tweeple (or worse)–have 140 characters to answer the question, “What are you doing?” If you join Twitter you can “follow” other tweeple, which causes their updates to appear on your home page. In turn, they can follow you, a form of permission-based marketing. You can also direct message them, but always in 140 characters or less. Twitter communications can be viewed and updated on the Web, through desktop apps, and on mobile devices. Although I use all three methods, I prefer twhirl, a desktop app that has some nice added features and updates my incoming tweets in the background while I work. A quick peek at some recent posts–called “tweets”–include what people are having for breakfast, vague unease about a job interview and a complaint that raw vegetables make one’s mouth “itchy.” (Plus a bunch of non-English tweets that may range from the ridiculous to the sublime and back again.) How Does Twitter Help You Work? Within this participating audience of exhibitionists are a growing number of people who are using Twitter for business. And I’m not just talking about aggressive Web marketers who tweet every blog post they make and create links to all their online activities. (You can create clickable links in tweets, but they have no direct search engine benefits.) Rather, there are professionals who are using Twitter as a communications tool. (Imagine that!) Here’s how you might use Twitter for......

As the information content of the Web grows, so does the need to make Web sites more dynamic. Think of an e-shop that has 1,000 products. The owner has to create 1,000 Web pages (one for each product), and whenever anything changes, the owner has to change all those pages. Ouch! Wouldn't it be easier to have only one page that created and served the content on the fly from the information about the products stored in a database, depending on the client request? Nowadays sites......
