Title: Pond Microorganisms Lab

Observation: Different types of organisms live in different ecosystems.

Question (Problem): What types of microorganisms are found in pond water in a North Carolina pond?

Hypothesis: If samples from a pond ecosystem are examined under a microscope, then ______________________________________________________________________
Materials: (List the materials used in this experiment here.)

1. Collect a few drops of water from the bottom of your water sample using an eye dropper.
2. Place a drop on the center of the microscope slide.
3. Cover the slide with a cover slip by lowering the cover slip at an angle over the water drop in a manner that spreads out the water drop, but does not trap air bubbles.
4. Observe the prepared slide under the microscope.
5. Use the picture ID sheet to identify the organisms observed.
6. Draw a picture in a data table of each organism observed.
7. Write the name of the organism under the picture, if the organism can be identified.
8. Describe each organism using qualitative (adjectives) and quantitative (measurements and counts) terms.
9. Repeat steps 1 to 8 until enough organisms are found.

Results: (Describe what you observed. List the different types of organisms found and how many of each type of organism was found. Write a description of each organism (step 8).) Hint: A data table with a title and headings in each column is a great way to summarize your results. The title should describe the data. Your data table should include the following columns: Organism Type, Number Found, Picture, and Description. (The description should include size, color, shape, number of legs etc.). Use an extra sheet of paper for your table.

...September, 2012 Crossing The Big Pond “Is this going to be my time to die?” is what John Robertson asked himself as he received the news he was going to deploy to Iraq. He wondered if he would be able to ever see his family again. Iraq in 2003 was a very dangerous place. Soldiers were getting hit with improvised exploding devices, rocket propelled grenades, mortar rounds, and small arms fire. John wondered if he would become another statistic. Would he be able to see his kids grow up? Would he ever see his wife and family again? These were all the questions that faced John as he got ready to go to war for the first time in his life. The day came for John to leave to fly to Iraq. John was excited and scared all at the same time. Once in Kuwait the reality began to sink in as they waited of the border of Iraq to cross. As the first convoy left John and his comrades heard gun fire as soon as the convoy crossed the border. John was scared at this point. Finally it was John’s time to cross the border. ...The Importance of Rewriting Storm Water Regulations Danielle Nielsen Goochland High School Abstract This paper observes the negative and harmful effects of water pollution and storm water runoff on the environment and the surrounding community. The most common form of water pollution is sediment runoff. It then goes on to explain the research and effectiveness of Best Management Practices (BMPs) and their positive effects. BMPs are conservation practices that can preserve or improve the state of the environment. The argument stated in this essay refers to the use of storm water regulations in the United States. Most regulations are too strict to allow for any conservation practices because they can be very costly and ineffective if carried out improperly. If the storm water regulations are rewritten to allow for BMPs, then the state of commercial and non-commercial water sources could be greatly improved. ...Willis Pond History Compiled by Rob Hershfield, August 1999 From Reference Materials at Goodnow Library Geology and Geography The Cenozoic age began about six to eight million years ago, following the tropical Mesozoic age when dinosaurs and forests flourished. The Cenozoic has two main sub-divisions, the Tertiary and the Quaternary, the latter of which is again divided into three divisions: the Glacial, Champlain and Terrace. During the Glacial, an ice sheet reaching six thousand feet in thickness covered the entire northern portion of our continent including New England, and had a constant tendency to move south. During the Champlain Epoch, several small sheets of water such as Willis Pond, Bottomless Pond (now called Crystal Lake), Blandford’s Pond (on Cavicchio Farm – now filled in) and Pratt’s Pond (now Puffer Pond in the old Fort Devens Annex), were created in the Peakham area of Sudbury. These ponds probably owe their origin to large masses of ice having been left there, around which the sand was deposited by the currents, and later as these masses of ice melted they left the hollows which now hold the ponds. Willis Pond is the largest of these ponds and lies at the northwest part of town. It is nearly surrounded by forests, and is a little lake in the woods. Moreover, in comparison with other forms of renewable energy such as wind, tidal, and solar, liquid biofuels allow solar energy to be stored, and also to be used directly in existing engines and transport infrastructure. Phytoremediation technology using aquatic plants in constructed wetlands and stormwater detention ponds is increasingly applied to remediate eutrophic waters. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness and potential of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) in removing nutrients including nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from stormwater in the constructed water detention systems before it is discharged into the St. Lucie Estuary, an important surface water system in Florida, using phytoremediation technologies. Materials and methods In this study, water lettuce (P. stratiotes) was planted in the treatment plots of two stormwater detention ponds (East and West Ponds) in 2005–2007 and water samples from both treatment and control plots were weekly collected and analyzed for water quality properties including pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, suspended solids, and nutrients (N and P). Optimum plant density was maintained and plant samples were collected monthly and analyzed for nutrient contents. Results Water quality in both ponds was improved, as evidenced by decreases in water turbidity, suspended solids, and nutrient concentrations. Water turbidity was decreased by more than 60%. ...Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, published in 1854, is a book composed of the author’s reflections on living simply for several years near Walden Pond. One of the final chapters of this book entitled “Spring” opens the gateway for a physical and metaphorical change in the author’s life. This chapter will be examined through several topics including historical context, the audience, the speaker and the text itself in an attempt to analyze the rhetoric utilized by Thoreau. “Spring” calls forth a transformative and, almost, biblical attitude leading those who read this excerpt to sense the physical changes occurring at Walden Pond. Thoreau, himself, anxiously awaits this seasonal change as it is almost as if the Earth is experiencing a rebirth of its own. “…One attraction in coming to the woods to live was that I should have leisure and opportunity to see the Spring come in” (Thoreau, 1854, p. 322).
