Sydnie Crockett wrote the article “My life as a foster mom” that was published in the Globe and Mail on Thursday, Oct. 07, 2010. This article talks about her role as a caregiver, in other words a foster mom, and her struggles with not only the children and youth that come but also with her own personal life. She has fostered 20 children, some that come and go in and out of her life and other children that stay for years. She is a 57 year old woman that devotes her life trying to help people; she doesn’t ask or push the children to telling her their stories but rather supports their privacy. Her place isn’t to replace the parents of those children but rather stabilize their lives by providing a safe environment full of the necessities of life; food, shelter, and love. Although this isn’t a fairy tale ending for everyone involved, Sydnie keeps her head high and continues to help even though she loses her own friends in the process. With the support of her loving husband, for 6 years and counting, Sydnie Crockett is helping to change lives.
I find it interesting that a foster parent isn’t informed of things that one should know if there are many other people/children present. “I don't know who their friends are, who has had chicken pox, who has had vaccinations” (Sydnie Crockett, 2010). I can understand how Crockett may not know the friends of these children because the child may not have very many friends or at least not close friends depending on the situation. If these children are moved from foster home to foster home every few months then how could they have time to really develop the kind of friendship with someone that you would tell your parents or other adults about? What I do find strange is that since there are other children in the house, knowing whether a child has…...

...Wal-Mart Readings Assignment Both of the articles, Wal-Marts Foreign Expansion and Wal-Mart Finds That Its Formula Doesn’t Fit Every Culture discuss how Wal-Mart has adapted to the demands of local customers as they continue to bring their company to countries all over the world. Although they have not been successful in each of the countries they have tried to bring their business into, Wal-Mart has learned that in order to be a successful company in foreign countries, they must adapt to the cultural differences. One initiative that Wal-Mart took to improve and adapt to their international locations was hiring local managers who understood the local culture. 1. I think that it depends strongly on the country and what the desires of the consumers in that county. In poorer countries, people may be looking for goods that can be offered at a lower price, such as in Mexico, which is why it worked out so well for Wal-Mart. However, although low price is important, cultural customs play a big role and that may interfere with the company’s success. 2. The reason that I believe Wal-Mart was successful in Mexico, was because the company hired local managers that were able to relate to and understand the locals’ needs. Once they were able to figure out that the shopping habits of the Mexicans were different to the Americans, they were able to fan out their success. The people of Mexico were looking interested in smaller stores that offered more fresh produce. So......

Individual Paper - Assignments from the Readings

...Individual Paper - Assignments from the readings In this short essay I will try to explain Limited Liability Corporation and partnerships. I will also try to put in perspective if I were to establish my own business what would I choose and why would I choose one over the other. In order to explain this we must first know what is Limited Liability Corporation and liability partnership. According to smallbusiness.chron.com a liability corporation or company is LLC owners, called "members," can manage their businesses or hire professional managers. In addition, LLCs enjoy a lot of flexibility. For instance, they can have as many members as they like, and corporations are allowed to be members. LLCs enjoy freedom from the state-mandated membership and management reporting requirements that corporations have. Most important, LLCs do not have to pay taxes. Instead, their profits and losses are passed through to their members' individual tax returns in the same way as a partnership. As a result, members enjoy the advantages of avoiding the "double taxation" of corporations as well as receiving tax relief from the poor performance of their LLCs. Also according to smallbusiness.chron.com a liability partnership is LLPs have the same tax advantages of LLCs. They cannot, however, have corporations as owners. Perhaps the most significant difference between LLCs and LLPs is that LLPs must have at least one managing partner who bears liability for the partnership's actions. With an...

Review Assignment Business Ethics

...Geoffrey M. Cox Macroethics. Personal Responsibility in an Age of Global Problems Review Assignment Make a summary of the author’s main contentions This study starts with the point of view that classic ethics are failing when they are confronted with many global problems. Compared to other periods of time, the world is able to connect nowadays. Because of the possibilities of the media, nearly ever person has qualitatively and quantitatively choices. The author emphasizes that we don’t choose to be global citizens; she claims that the world’s people are global citizens. People would choose the way of living with the media. The human nature is the basis for the philosophical morality. The concept of virtue, which was defined by Aristotle and other philosophers is basing on the philosophical morality. They underline that people fulfill their potential by using their intellect and will. „Excellent“ would not be given by nature, people have to put afford in work to achieve this status. Besides, other philosophers characterized mortality apart from particular human talents and functions. For examples Kant refers to rationality or Hume choose rationality as criterion. Other authors also claim natural right as the source of ethics. In all of these described concepts, ethics are based on essential human experience and our notions of ethical goodness are intrinsically bound up with our self-definition. ...As I was reading through the slides of “The Business Plan Pitch” PowerPoint, I noticed that the entrepreneurs that spoke in front of the class all followed a similar model. Everyone started off with a hook that was directed to attract the audience. Next came a brief description of the product or service to give the listeners a general sense of what exactly the speaker was selling. The pitch continued with a market description, along with the opportunity to show that there is potential for this product or service to be successful. A description of how the company will make money came next, along with an outline of the business model. Partnerships and alliances were mentioned if necessary, and the pitch was ended with future plans and expectations/goals. Although all the pitches were different, they all had a majority of the four “must haves.” Like mentioned earlier, they all started with a hook. First impression is everything, and if the speaker can’t draw the audience in within the first few seconds, the presentation is useless. All the speakers had passion. The speaker must be excited in order for the audience to have excitement about the business. Every presentation was short. Long pitches can cause the audience to lose interest, which won’t help. All the presenters kept their pitches under 2-3 minutes. Due to the fact these presentations were verbal, only one of the speakers used graphics on a PowerPoint. Graphics are more affective than words due to the fact audience......

...Material Reviewed: Assessing Opportunities for Growth Investors PowerPoint I found the material under review interesting because they touched upon certain aspects of growing a business that we have already begun to discuss in class as well as emphasized how much each business has to be individual in their approach to growing a sustainable business. In the article by Professor Frank Hoy, very important points on starting and growing a business are introduced to the reader. The corridor principle, which was discussed in class and elaborated on in this article, suggests that the only way to progress with a business idea is to actualize it by starting the business. This principle resonates with me because it suggests that planning only goes some way to inform you about the potential of your idea but until you really start to work on the idea you will never know how feasible your idea is and whether the direction you had for your business is a valid one or not. Most importantly, the article’s emphasis on the need for creativity in obtaining funds for a business opportunity applies to growing and managing new ventures as it shows how important the recognition of the right funding avenues is to managing and realizing your business opportunity. This part of the article to me explains the importance of the investor’s PowerPoint document. As mentioned in class, acquisition of investors is an important aspect of growing and managing new ventures since they provide a lifeline...

...ISOM 135 Summer 2013 Reading Assignment # 1 5/20/13 The problem in this case is the U.S. health care industry is the world’s most inefficient information enterprise. An electronic medical record system would save a lot of money in health care, and it would generally be easier on staff and doctor to access information. Electronic records would possibly reduce error and improve care, create less paperwork, and provide quicker service. The difficulties in building electronic medical record systems include it costing $30,000 to $50,000 per doctor. This would cause an issue for medical practices with fewer than four doctors. Also, training a doctor would take up to 20 hours of his or her time. There would be many obstacles that health providers, IT developers, and insurance companies would need to overcome before this system could be used nationally. Not digitalizing medical records would impact patients. Patients already using this system reduced their hospital admission by 25 percent and the length of their hospital stays by 20 percent. VistA improves patient quality of care. It insures that correct dosages are given and going to the correct patient. As mentioned before, this system would greatly reduce human error. One issue with electronic medical records is the sharing of records between different systems. Some systems may not be able to report the same data to one another. Another problem is there could be a conflict of interest for the insurance companies......

The History of the Music Business: Literature Review of Readings

...The History of the Music Business: Literature review of readings The landscape of the music business has been shaped by influential minds in music history. From as early as the 1940s to the 21st century, artists such as Nirvana and managers such as Peter Grant have made major decisions that would shape their careers and subsequently the future of the music business (Goldberg, 2008; Welch, 2003). In this literature review, the events and decisions that helped shaped the future will be examined and explored in the text to understand their impact on the music business. Ahmet was one of the influential people in the early stages of the music industry (Greenfield, 2011). When he met all the guys with independent record companies and decided they were ‘a bunch of third-rate crooks’, he like Rothchild jumped on the opportunity to get into the record business and eventually finding Atlantic records with Herb (Greenfield, 2011: 40; Goodman, 1997). But not all independent record labels were third rate crooks, Morris Levy, started from an independent record company, Roulette and was an important figure in the early stages of the music business (Dannen, 1990). He was described as the octopus of the music industry with his influences and connections, especially with the mafia who were heavily influential in many parts of the States. This would set the precedent for the future rap industry in which the themes of alcohol, stripper, violence and drugs are common and run by gangsters....

If Sharon were risk neutral, which investments would she select? Explain why. She should accept Investments X and Y because these have higher returns than the 12% required return and the risk wouldn’t matter. b. If she were risk averse, which investments would she select? Why? She would then accept Investment X. It provides the highest return and has the least amount of risk. Investment X offers an increase in return this is because you are taking on more risk than what the organization earns. c. If she were risk seeking, which investments would she select?
