Room

...My Room As I sleepily stumble into my house at midnight there is only one place I want to be: my room. As I walk in I try to avoid the clothes thrown all over like landmines in a battlefield. My room is the closest resemblance to me, someone who loves sports and music. I flop onto my bed staring up at the ceiling light covered in baseballs and basketballs. In one of the corners of the ceiling there is an ugly yellow stain the size of a football from my once leaky roof. My room has changed little since I was younger. Everywhere I look I see something to do with sports, mostly the Red Sox. Two red pin strips wrap around my white walls. As I sit on my bed tucked away in the right corner, I catch myself staring at a huge picture of Fenway Park hanging above my desk. To the right the infamous picture of Carlton Fisk waving his homerun right hangs over my closet. Dangling from a hanger on my closet is a retro New York Mets jersey signed by Mike Piazza that waits to be encased. Right next to my bed an oversized Red Sox logo sticks to the wall. The logo is almost bigger than the wall itself. A black and red “jet life hangs” over my head, probably the only thing that doesn’t have to do with sports in my room. My desk is littered with nickels, dimes, and pennies that I have tossed on it. There are clothes all over my desk; some folded others rolled up in balls that have been sitting there for days. ...The movie Boiler Room depicts a 19-year-old named Seth who gets a job at a corrupt stockbroker firm. As he starts his job there, Seth starts to notice many questionable practices that his coworkers do without question. When Seth questions this, he is told to ignore it. The film comes to a head when the FBI arrest Seth, and he must testify against the firm to clear his name. One practice shown in the movie is representing yourself as someone you are not. For example, Seth is told to “be whoever he wants to be” on the phone. Seth is shown on different calls lying about who he is. He tells one customer that he is married and owns a home, and he tells another he is vice president of the firm. I believe people should always portray themselves as who they are. Seth’s lying convinced more customers to buy stocks, which in the end lost them money and hurt Seth’s reputation. Stockbrokers should not try to sell stock by misleading customers into thinking they are someone different than they are. The second practice I do not agree with is the firm using a system called “pump and dump.” This means that the brokers create artificial demand in the stock of expired or fake companies. This practice causes many people to be cheated out of their money and put in bad financial situations. This creates a false market, and although it may make the brokers money, it hurts other members of society. I do not believe one should get a job only for personal gain. ...Rooms Division The rooms division is one of the key departments within a hotel, involving the sales and the delivery of services and facilities for the guests. According to Baker, Huyton and Bradley (2000), this department is the most important as rooms sales are the main source of revenue for the business. This department is usually divided into two departments: front office and housekeeping, however Dix and Baird (1998), explain that larger hotels will have many more smaller departments including advance reservations, reception, cashier and so on. The role of the front office derives from the guest cycle, which according to Baker, Huyton and Bradley (2000), refers to the stages of a typical hotel stay. ...In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in The Room. There were no distinguishing features save for the one wall covered with small index-card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endlessly in either direction, had very different headings. As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read "Girls I Have Liked." I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one. And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was. This seemingly lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match. A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their content. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching. A file named "Friends" was next to one marked "Friends I Have Betrayed." The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird.
