...As a former Soviet citizen and Soviet Jew, I experienced a huge discrimination in the USSR. All Soviet citizens had passports with a record of nationality in them. Some people had Russian nationality, some Ukranian nationality, and some, like me, had a Jewish record on the first page. We needed to show a passport when applying for jobs, getting housing, or entering University. And when you had a Jewish record it was like being a registered sex offender in the US today. Jews were pariahs in the USSR. You should not tell anybody you were a Jew. Some Russian people would beat you. Silently, the Soviet government supported this. When I was a child, some neighbors knew we were Jews, so they sent their kids to fight with me. I was beaten many times, just because of the Jewish Scarlett Letter. The Soviet Police were responsible for maintaining the passport system, and putting the Scarlett Jewish ID there. This looks just like the situation for sex offenders in many states today. When their neighbors learn a sex offender family has moved next door, the sex offenders and their families are hassled, possibly their houses attacked, and some sex offenders have even been killed. After graduating from high school I was going to Leningrad University. A University worker asked for my passport. He made a note about nationality, and told me there are too many Jews here. As a result I got an F on my first test, and could not enter University. I was an A+ student in high school. When I......

Day to Day Effects

...Extra Credit 1 Every day, every minute, in fact every second, we are interacting and building connections with everything we see and do. For this assignment, I want to focus on my encounter with Starbucks staff. I probably am one of the biggest Starbucks fanatic anyone will every encounter. I love the thrill of going to Starbucks, and anticipating and thinking about what my new Starbucks concoction will be. Reflecting upon my Starbucks experiences, I have come to a conclusion of whether we know it or not, our unintended communications turn into a relationships that we fail to see. To test my thinking and prove it valid, I went to the Starbucks that I have been going to for years now. Here goes my thoughts, “What do I order? What am I feeling today? What is the new drink that came out?”. As I walked in, I examined the same feeling of thrill and excitement that rushes upon me. As I wait in the long, almost endless lines at Starbucks, I especially examine other people’s orders and get inspired for my order. As the line lessens, I am finally able to reach upon my decision of my order. Instantly, the woman taking my order my order found me quit familiar and said, “hello, how’s your day today? Would you like chai latte or caramel macchiato?” and I found it surprising on how she knew exactly what I want. Reflecting upon the situation, I realize how going to Starbucks often, I run into the same people, the same staff and essentially built a relationship that we don’t realize.......

...Southern rock is a category of the genre of rock music. It developed in the United States and varies from rock and roll, country, and blues and it is focused generally on electric or acoustic guitar and vocals. Southern rock plays a huge part in the influence of modern rock music. Important figures of southern rock include The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Widespread Panic, Creedence Clearwater, and many more that have influenced the southern rock culture greatly and some bands which are still paving the way for the future of southern rock music. Southern rocks origins lie mainly in the American South. In the 1950's many Southern Rock stars came about such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis but however in the 1960's British invasion and the rise of folk, and psychadelic rock shifted the focus away from Southern Rock and the rural south and to large cities like Liverpool, London, New York, and San Francisco. Although this shift changed interests in rock in the late 1960's bands revived roots of southern rock such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The band. Creedence Clearwater Revival was among the best southern rock group in the 1960's. Also known as Creedence or CCR consisted of a lead guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter. Also rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. Their musical style infused roots rock and swamp rock genres but overall portrayed a southern rock style singing about popular......

A Day of Nothing and a Day of Activity

...A Day of Nothing and a Day of Activity From what I can recall, I did nothing of particular interest on February 8, so I shall elect to skip talking about it. To make up for the lack, I shall write an excruciatingly long entry for today. As is typical of an exchange student at Kansai Gaidai, I awoke only to begin my journey over to my Japanese class. In class, we played 'Who's Pen Is This?' in order to practice our previously learned grammar lesson. Next, we planned a pretend trip in order to practice another grammar lesson. Finally, we learned a new grammar point before departing. My next activity was to wait 40 minutes so that I could meat Saki and Chiaki again for lunch. This time, I brought my laptop along so that I could share photographs from back home. While waiting, I was joined by Wayne, a Chinese student who I had previously met, and Keisuke. At first, Keisuke swore that Wayne was a Japanese person, but after some effort to convince him otherwise, he believed that he was not. Come 11:30, I took my leave from the boys to join the girls in the cafeteria. Since it was rainy and drab awful outside today, Saki and Chiaki were waiting inside the cafeteria instead of the outside area where they usually wait. After getting food, we ate and talked some. Once finishing, we made our way to the CIE lounge so I could plug in my laptop and begin the show. A wise move plugging it in, I might add, as the presentation lasted about four hours. I began by showing pictures of my......

...this bit is zero, the kernel can do whatever it pleases with the remaining fields. The R/W flag stands for read/write; if clear, the page is read-only. Flag U/S stands for user/supervisor; if clear, then the page can only be accessed by the kernel. These flags are used to implement the read-only memory and protected kernel space we saw before. Bits D and A are for dirty and accessed. A dirty page has had a write, while an accessed page has had a write or read. Both flags are sticky: the processor only sets them, they must be cleared by the kernel. Finally, the PTE stores the starting physical address that corresponds to this page, aligned to 4KB. This naive-looking field is the source of some pain, for it limits addressable physical memory to 4 GB. The other PTE fields are for another day, as is Physical Address Extension. A virtual page is the unit of memory protection because all of its bytes share the U/S and R/W flags. However, the same physical memory could be mapped by different pages, possibly with different protection flags. Notice that execute permissions are nowhere to be seen in the PTE. This is why classic x86 paging allows code on the stack to be executed, making it easier to exploit stack buffer overflows (it’s still possible to exploit non-executable stacks using return-to-libc and other techniques). This lack of a PTE no-execute flag illustrates a broader fact: permission flags in a VMA may or may not translate cleanly into hardware protection. The......

Day-to-Day Stress

...Day-to-Day Stress Omar R. Hameen GEN/200 May 17, 2011 Barbara Alston Day-to-Day Stress In the following paper I would like to talk about a problem that causes stress my daily life. I will describe how to gather information to help me solve this problem and where the information can be obtained. In this paper I will talk about my experiences and how I deal various forms of stressors at home and in social settings. Daily stress Stress is a term used by many, is severly misunderstood, and often used to describe a negative condition or emotional state. It is our biological way of dealing with sudden changes in our life. The biggest stressor for me is fatigue.   Most days, my morning starts around 10 a.m.   By 11 a.m., I’m hurrying to the store to grab an energy drink then back home to work on school assignments and apply for jobs online.   At 12 a.m. I start my “work day”, which typically requires cleaning, preparing my daughter for school, and taking care of any outside work that needs to be done.   I usually find myself leaving home at 5 p.m. and heading to pick up my daughter from daycare.   Whether we go to the park, play some type of sports in the yard, or go on a bike ride; I spend the next 3 hours running around behind my 4 year old daughter, using my last bit of stored energy. When our playtime is done we head inside to do her school work and other learning activities.   Spending family time is important, so usually its dinner and a movie until...

...There has been debate over the present day characteristics of biomes of tropical regions. For some, they are seen as a natural response to the climate of the area, whereas for others they are regarded as a product of human interference. Discuss the statement in the context of the tropical biome you have studied. [40] A tropical rainforest is an ecosystem type that occurs roughly within the latitudes 28 degrees north or south of the equator (in the equatorial zone between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn). This ecosystem experiences high average temperatures and a significant amount of rainfall. In particular, I will be focusing on Borneo Rainforest, which is the oldest rainforest in the world. The island is divided among three countries (figure 1): Malaysia and Brunei in the north, and Indonesia to the south. Approximately 73% of the island is Indonesian territory. In the north, the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak make up about 26% of the island. Climate is the average weather the region receives over a 30 year period. Climate can be on a global scale or a local scale, for instance where it is mountainous more rainfall is generated therefore that region sees a different climate to perhaps a neighbouring region. Aspect and altitude also affects climate, which will be explored in greater detail. The purpose of this essay is to explore whether the natural, climatic factors have influenced the characteristics of the rainforest, or whether humans have......

...Day-To-Day Life Time Management Lucretia Chadwick GEN/200 Robyann Musil August 8, 2011 In my day-to-day life, I would like to address and solve the problem that I face with time management. I have found that in the past time management has been a major issue, not only in my personal life but also academically and professional. I am starting a new school, have a job and have a family to take care of. I want to make an effort to give all my endeavors my all, in order to do this I would like to refine my time management skills. To develop time management skills I plan on researching a plan of action from the textbook. The information that I have found was in Chapter one. The textbook gives various steps to better time management such as setting goals for you. Goals are an important part of life, but it is even more important for my time management plan. I will be seeking steps that the book suggests for time management and determine which steps will be beneficial for particular part of my life that I will be evaluating. Not all the steps will be beneficial for me, but most will. I will determine which steps will be necessary to use, for example, how my personal life will affect my professional life or how my academic life may affect my personal life. I will begin to set goals for myself before determining a time management plan. I will set short term goals along with long term goals for the part of my life that I need to work on time management plan. I will start......

...turn it off, and ultimately having to get ready for a long day of meetings that were going to be more boring than high council Sunday. These foreshadowings which I saw came true as I got ready for my day and left for the seminary. I can remember my thoughts as I went through the door of the seminary that morning, they were: “how long will this take? And will there be food?” Luckily there was the later otherwise I probably would have walked out. That first day, as it turned out, was an amazing experience where each of the members of the council got to know each other better. We were instructed on how to function together and how to work as a team. After 5 or 6 hours of lecture and activities reinforcing these ideas, I was ready to go home. Later that night after I had just gotten in bed, I remembered that during the next day of training, we would have to pick a theme scripture for the year. I had the inclination to pray for help for the next day, but before I could think to get my knees on the floor, I had already fallen asleep. Just a note of advice, when you get an idea about something that is church related in a good way, you should probably listen to it,…….but of course I was too lazy and forgot. Waking up the next morning was a little bit better even though I still hit my head on my way to turn off my alarm. I went through the routine of my morning and made it to the seminary with a similar feeling to the previous day. When each of the other council members took their......

That Day

...Life Changing Experiences By: Olivia Son Growing up in the country you could always find me outside playing with my friends or relatives. We would literally go outside the moment we woke up and would not come back inside until bedtime. Between riding four-wheelers, jumping on trampolines, and having mud fights you never knew what we might me getting into that day. I had my share of bumps and bruises along the way but I would not have changed a single minute of it. We all grow up thinking that we are invincible until something happens in your life that changes all that. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. It was a hot summer day just like any other and I was your typical fourteen-year-old girl who wanted to spend all her free time hanging out with her boyfriend. This day was no different. I woke up that morning and of course could not wait to spend time with him. Therefore, I rushed through breakfast and did everything that my mom had asked me to do before he was allowed to come over. Finally, he was at my house and we were deciding what we might get into. It was so hot outside so we decided that we would go swimming and ride my four-wheeler. We figured we would going four-wheeler riding first that way if we got dirty we could just jump into the pool when we got back and wash off. So we changed into our swim suits and headed out. Looking back wearing only a swim suit and flip flops to go riding might not of been the best idea but it was something......

Some Read Between the Lines That Dunkirk for Britain Was a Triumph Because the Soldiers Escaped and Survived the Incident at Dunkirk to Fight Another Day

...Some read between the lines that Dunkirk for Britain was a triumph because the soldiers escaped and survived the incident at Dunkirk to fight another day; this can be seen in interpretations of source B1. Its written by a military historian who interprets Dunkirk as ‘a miracle’ he then goes on to say ‘Hundreds of troops were rescued from the German advance in a nick of time- it seemed like a victory just getting the troops back to fight another day’ the historian has come to this conclusion because they saved a whole lot of people even though they lost some, it boosted the opinions of the army in the public eye and how they can fight another day. This is a reliable piece of evidence to a certain extent as it gives you all the information about Dunkirk, it is written by a military historian, so it’s got professional hindsight because of that and because it was written 60 or so years after it happened. However this source can be questioned as it was written 6 decades after it happened so some of the facts could have been lost, it’s only a one sided piece of evidence and it could be biased as he would be working for the government as a historian. It’s also not a primary source as he wasn’t there which it happened. From source b2 I can infer that the British soldiers were brave and that even though they were alone they were not willing to back down. Their ally France had let them down and now they had to face what was to transpire on their own. This also shows us that the......

...hang bulging and pendulous, in one spot for some seconds. Then, as they swell, suddenly they break loose and zigzag swiftly down the pane, following the slippery pathway that previous drops have made. It is like a little puzzle game where you manoeuvre a weighted capsule among pegs toward a narrow opening. "Pigs in clover," they sometimes call it, but who knows why? The conduct of raindrops on a smoking-car window is capricious and odd, but we must pass on. That topic alone would serve for several hundred words, but we will not be opportunist. We stood at the front door of the baggage car, and in a pleasant haze of the faculties we thought of a number of things. We thought of some books we had seen up on East Fifty-ninth Street, in that admirable row of old bookshops, particularly Mowry Saben's volume of essays, The Spirit of Life, which we are going back to buy one of these days; so please let it alone. We then got out a small note-book in which we keep memoranda of books we intend to read and pored over it zealously. Just for fun, we will tell you three of the titles we have noted there: The Voyage of the Hoppergrass, by E. L. Pearson People and Problems, by Fabian Franklin Broken Stowage, by David W. Bone But most of all we thought, in a vague sentimental way, about that pleasant Long Island country through which the engine was haling and hallooing all those carloads of audacious commuters. Only the other day we heard a wise man say that he did not......

...at a time and forget about everything, because I know and I am sure the pain is too painful bare at times. No one can’t nor should be able to judge your breakdown; everyone once in a while has their own too at a point. And with that when they are ready to get back on their feet and keep on going that it the time to build up you again. It takes time to fully recover with so many things happening but you will be strong and stay strong. This is the reason why I picked this verse or line from this song. I really like it; it reminded me at a time when I was like this too. I can relate to it in many ways. I feel that this is so true when someone do breakdown there will be a time when they will get up and build themselves again. It will take some times but hey it a start to somewhere you want to be with....
