This chapter describes the critical role of operations to the global competitiveness of the organization. We start the discussion with a review of global trends in the economy, the evolution of international markets and products, and the impact of operations on competitiveness and the global supply chain. Next we describe the process of formulating and implementing the busi-


ness strategy, including the role of outsourcing and offshoring. Following this, we describe five strategic frameworks available to businesses as underpinnings for their strategy, and then close the chapter with a description of those operations factors that are critical to offering value to the customer. For an organization, operations include all the activities necessary for the fulfillment of customer requests, not just manufacture, also marketing, HRM, accounting, etc (Slack, Chambers and Johnston 2007, p5). And according to Skinner (1969), operations management (OM) can contribute to better company performance like reduced cost, increased revenue, etc. As a kind of understanding, whether a company has good operation strategies and management is one important factor that can “make” or “break” a business.
