Abstract
Total productive maintenance (TPM) is a concept applied to improve the overall equipment efficiency (OEE) and the capabilities and skills of the workers in the plant. It is founded on eight pillars to support the concept And achieve three goals. Japan institute of plan maintenance (JIPM) is the leading body of TPM.
The history of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

TPM has been developed from the original PM (preventive maintenance or productive maintenance) concept and methodology introduced from the USA. It has been further developed and implemented in many Japanese companies, and is now rapidly becoming a method applied worldwide.
In 1971, Nippon Denso Co., Ltd. first introduced and successfully implemented TPM in Japan. They won the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) PM Excellent Plant Award for their activities. This was the beginning of TPM in Japan. Since then, TPM has spread progressively throughout the world and established itself as a renowned cultural improvement programme
The first example of TPM used in Europe to deliver world class performance was by Volvo in Ghent, Belgium, who won the PM prize for their work in the paint shop. This was quickly followed in the early 1990s by other European automotive companies trying to close the productivity and quality gap to their Japanese competitors.
Since the JIPM TPM awards were founded, over 3000 organizations have won awards, including Unilever, Wrigley, Tetra Pak, Heineken and Arcelor Mittal.

Scheduling should be viewed as the “point” function and “marketing arm” of the system because it yields the earliest tangible results (often within weeks of start up). All individuals and groups perform better and accomplish more with clearly established, communicated and published expectations. When the maintenance function is managed without a weekly schedule, there are no specific expectations as to what is to be accomplished with the resources for which payroll checks will be drawn. Instead, whatever reactive demands are made is what will be done. The fundamental requirement target (the schedule) against which to control, followed by action (execution of the schedule) to achieve the target. The results, measured against the original intention (called schedule compliance), provide feedback for correcting deviations (improving future schedule compliance). ...Mindless or Productive? We all enjoyed watching high school sports back in our day. We saw our school beat other schools from around the region, we watched our friends play their hearts out doing the sport they loved, and we even showed off our school spirit by wearing our school’s colors. We thrived off seeing our friends perform and entertaining the crowd with their skills in different sports. However, there seems to be a common trend about what students and everyone else think about when considering the high school athletes: Are they dumb, mindless, and a waste of time and money? Well I believe that high school athletes are not mindless and dumb, but rather very productive, both athletically and academically. The first reason is that the sports they play in keeps them healthy and active. There are numerous reports that show how being active in sports actually benefits you not only academically, but also in a healthy way too. Past and current maintenance practices in both the private and government sectors would imply that maintenance is the actions associated with equipment repair after it is broken. The dictionary defines maintenance as follows: “the work of keeping something in proper condition; upkeep.” This would imply that maintenance should be actions taken to prevent a device or component from failing or to repair normal equipment degradation experienced with the operation of the device to keep it in proper working order. Unfortunately, data obtained in many studies over the past decade indicates that most private and government facilities do not expend the necessary resources to maintain equipment in proper working order. Rather, they wait for equipment failure to occur and then take whatever actions are necessary to repair or replace the equipment. Nothing lasts forever and all equipment has associated with it some predefined life expectancy or operational life. For example, equipment may be designed to operate at full design load for 5,000 hours and may be designed to go through 15,000 start and stop cycles. The need for maintenance is predicated on actual or impending failure – ideally, maintenance is performed to keep equipment and systems running efficiently for at least design life of the component(s).
