Chapter 2

This chapter presents the literature and studies made by various educators which are found relevant to the present study.
Relevant, related literatures were reviewed and analyzed to give support to the study undertaken. This chapter presents the discussion made by the different authorities which served as the backbone of the present research inquiry.

Anxiety Sensitivity and Risk Taking Behavior

Risk-taking refers to participation in behaviors that could lead to an undesirable or dangerous outcome (Byrnes, Miller & Schafer, 1999). Although risk-taking can be adaptive when the benefits of a behavior outweigh the costs or are more probable than the undesirable outcome, it can also be maladaptive when the opposite is true. Reason and judgment are used when assessing risk to determine if the potential gain of a behavior outweighs potential loss (Kahneman, 2003), and research suggests that personality and individual difference variables influence risk perception and risk taking behavior. (Dewberry, Juanchich & Narendran, 2013; Kozhevnikov, 2007). Studies have shown that the Big-5 personality factors (i.e., openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) exhibit different relationships with risk-preference. For example, individuals high in neuroticism tend to overestimate the probability of negative outcomes and are thus conservative in risk-taking (Peng, Xiao, Yang, Wu & Miao, 2014).
Research also suggests that emotions can have a significant impact on risk-perception and risky behaviors (Loewenstein, Weber, Hsee, & Welch, 2001). Early research on the relation between…...

Today’s college students are less prepared for college-level work than their predecessors. Once they get to college, they tend to spend fewer hours studying while spending more hours working, some even full time (D. T. Smart, C. A. Kelley, & J. S. Conant, 1999). In this study, the authors examined the effect of both time spent studying and time spent working on academic performance. The authors further evaluated the interaction of motivation and ability with study time and its effect on academic performance. The results suggested that nonability variables like motivation and study time significantly interact with ability to influence academic performance. Contrary to popular belief, the amount of time spent studying or at work had no direct influence on academic performance. The authors also addressed implications and direction for future research. The Context Many American students consider employment an integral part of their high school experience. NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) data from 1992 show that more than two-thirds of high school students were employed during their senior year, with 22.7 percent of those students working more than 20 hours per week. Most students worked in nonacademic jobs, with almost 25 percent employed in the food service industry, 14.5 percent working as a grocery clerk or cashier, and 11.8 percent working in sales. The vast majority of students earned between $4.25 and $6 per hour. Students in the United States work more than students in most other, postindustrial countries—more than triple the average amount of time their European and East Asian peers spend working, in fact. Adult degree seekers, first-generation students, students of color, and students from low-income backgrounds have become a mainstay in the growing mix in college today. This new mix challenges the persistent image of the of the “traditional,” direct-from-high school, white, middle-class college student on a residential campus, who may work part time, is dependent on parents, and graduates within four years. In fact this picture represents less than 27% of college students today (Choy 2002). ...This is the typical response from faculty members and administrators who are asked how much undergraduate students should work at paying jobs while attending college. Available research supports this recommendation. Quantitative studies consistently show that retention rates are higher for students who work a modest number of hours per week (ten to fifteen) than they are for students who do not work at all or those who work more than fifteen hours per week. Research also shows increased academic success for students working on rather than off campus. Unfortunately, this simple recommendation is no longer feasible or realistic for the typical undergraduate. Most college students are now not only employed but also working a substantial number of hours, a fact not widely understood or discussed by faculty members and policy makers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 2007 nearly half (45 percent) of “traditional” undergraduates—that is, students between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four attending college full time—worked while enrolled.
