wrong man

THE MAN had no useful work, only vagaries of various kinds.
Therefore it surprised him to find himself in Paradise after a life spent perfecting trifles.
Now the guide had taken him by mistake to the wrong Paradise-one meant only for good, busy souls.

In this Paradise, our man saunters along the road only to obstruct the rush of business.
He stands aside from the path and is warned that he tramples on sown seed. Pushed, he starts up: hustled, he moves on.
A very busy girl comes to fetch water from the well. Her feet run on the pavement like rapid fingers over harp-strings. Hastily she ties a negligent knot with her hair, and loose locks on her forehead pry into the dark of her eyes.
The man says to her, ‘Would you lend me your pitcher?’
‘My pitcher?’ she asks, ‘to draw water?’
‘No, to paint patterns on.’
I have no time to waste,’ the girl retorts in contempt.

Now a busy soul has no chance against one who is supremely idle.
Every day she meets him at the well, and every day he repeats the same request, till at last she yields.
Our man paints the pitcher with curious colours in a mysterious maze of lines.

The girl takes it up, turns it round and asks, ‘What does it mean?’
‘It has no meaning,’ he answers.
The girl carries the pitcher home. She holds it up in different lights and tries to con its mystery.
At night she leaves her bed, lights a lamp, and gazes at it from all points of view.
This is the first time she has met with something without meaning.

On the next day the man is again near the well.
The girl asks, ‘What do you want?’
‘To do more work for you.’
‘What work?’ she enquires.
‘Allow me to weave coloured strands into a ribbon to bind your hair.’
‘Is there any need?’ she asks.
‘None whatever,’ he allows,
The ribbon is made, and thenceforward she spends a great deal of time over her hair.
The even stretch of…...

A Man

...A shirtless young man stares out past the camera as if he is looking at the logo above his head. He needlessly clings to the rock to further accentuate his impressive body structure. The logo above his head reads “DOLCE & GABBANA” in a bold semi-transparent font. A small bottle of something is juxtaposed to his left. It is the item they are trying to sell, a sports cologne. This advertisement is very effective because of the use of ethos and pathos. Although those two parts are heavily used in this ad, logos is not present as much. Even with that being said many people are going to buy this particular cologne based on ethos and pathos. This is true because Dolce and Gabbana is a very well-known company, which plays a huge part in ethos with credibility and authority. Pathos is also used heavily with people wanting to look like that or women wanting their men to look like that; this makes the reader believe that if they wear this cologne women will be more attracted to them, and that they, too, can look as good as the model in the ad. This advertisement was featured in Muscle & Fitness magazine. This particular magazine is aimed towards classy young to middle-aged men who are professionals. This can be seen through the contents in the magazine. The magazine has lots of ads that are of watches, cologne, and nice cars. With that being said we do not believe that this magazine is geared toward younger teenage men because of what ads, pictures and articles in the......

Why Its Wrong

...: Why it's Wrong How would you feel if someone took away your ability to live? Imagine not having any say in whether or not you want to have a life. Well babies don't have a choice in their mother’s womb. If a woman decides to abort her baby, they can't do anything about their life being taken away from them. Their whole future is demolished. I believe abortion is wrong when committing it for a selfish reason. One reason why abortion is wrong is because there are many other safer solutions. In the article, Why Do More People Choose Abortion Over Adoption?, Kristi Burton Brown stated: “In the USA, there are approximately two million infertile couples waiting to adopt, many times regardless of the child’s medical problems such as Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, HIV infection or terminally ill. Dr. Brad Imler, President of America’s Pregnancy Helpline, confirms the challenge of waiting couples by stating: Only 1% of the Helpline’s annual 40,000 clients inquires about adoption.” Putting him/her up for adoption will give them a better chance at a happier life rather than abortion. The solution for a baby should not be death. If it was for a selfish solution, you're sacrificing a life many other families would love to raise as their own. Another reason why I don't support abortion is because it can harm the mother as well. You are highly risking the mother's life and affecting her. Not only does it have an effect on the USA but, it affects other countries as well like Spain.......

A Man Is a Man

...A Short Essay A Man is a Man, A Woman is a Woman Tabitha Ponder Ashford University ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Professor Carla McGill February 4, 2013 A Man is a Man, A Woman is A Woman Some may say that a man is a man and a woman is a woman; and they should stay in there prospective places at all costs. Gender roles can sometimes be reversed. Specifically, I am going to address the gender reversal in marriage. Several factors may contribute to role (gender) reversal. It depends on the personality of the individuals involved, and how they learn to interact with one another (or not). Also, a change in circumstances or a chain of events can force a gender role reversal. For example, the husband may get hurt on the job and now the wife who is accustomed to staying home with the kids now is forced to go out and provide for the family. Let’s define gender roles within a traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Traditionally, the husband is the one who provides for the family financially. He is the bread winner. Because he is the bread winner, normally he is the final voice of authority in the home concerning any issues that may arise. The wife is the one who is the caregiver. The wife is the nurturer; she takes care of the children and the husband too! She is also takes care of the affairs of the home. The depth of most people’s belief in gender-role stereotypes is often overlooked. A husband may have the......

A Wrong Man in Workers’ Paradise

...A Wrong man in Workers’ Paradise -Rabindranath Tagore - Introduction: Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a Bengali poet, philosopher, artist, playwright, composer and novelist. India's first Nobel laureate, Tagore won the 1913 Nobel Prize for Literature. He composed the text of both India's and Bangladesh's respective national anthems. His body of literature is deeply sympathetic for the poor and upholds universal humanistic values. His poetry drew from traditional Vaisnava folk lyrics and was often deeply mystical. Wrong Man’s Worldly Life: The man had never believed in mere utility. He had no useful work, he indulged in mad whims. He painted and made little pieces of sculptures, men, women and castles. Thus he wasted his time on all useless and needless things. People laughed at him. He spent his earth life in useless work and after death, the gates of heaven opened wide for him and he was sent to the Workers Paradise. But the newcomer did not fit well with the atmosphere in Workers’ Paradise. He lounged in the streets absently and jostled the hurrying men. He lay in the green meadows or close to the fast flowing stream. A girl went hustling-bustling everyday to a silent torrent (silent since in the Workers’ Paradise even a torrent wouldn't waste its energy singing), to fill her pitchers. Wrong Man’s Life in Paradise: The girl on seeing the man asked him about his work in that paradise. He said to her, he has not spared even a moment for work. She......

Righ and Wrong

...from jail? Socrates was a man who believed that is was immoral for him to escape his sentence because he had accepted the ruling of the courts. And for him to escape he would be sending the wrong message to his peers. He would be telling them that all of his ideals and believes really had no meaning to him and that all this his search for the truth was just a big lie. Socrates's argument proceeds from the statement of a perfectly general moral principle to its application in his particular case: * One ought never to do wrong (even in response to the evil committed by another). * But it is always wrong to disobey the state. * Hence, one ought never to disobey the state. And since avoiding the sentence of death handed down by the Athenian jury would be an action in disobedience the state, it follows Socrates ought not to escape. The argument is a valid one, so we are committed to accepting its conclusion if we believe that its premises are true. The general commitment to act rightly is fundamental to a moral life, and it does seem clear that Socrates's escape would be a case of disobedience. But what about the second premise, the claim that it is always wrong for an individual to disobey the state? Surely that deserves further examination. In fact, Socrates pictures the laws of Athens proposing two independent lines of argument in favor of this claim: First, the state is to us as a parent is to a child, and since it is always wrong for a child to disobey a......

She's the Man to Prove Them Wrong

...that your world was revolved around because you were a girl. In the movie She’s the Man (2004), Viola Hastings is told just that. When the girls’ soccer team at her school is cut because of a lack of players, she is devastated. She seeks the help of the boys’ soccer coach, asking him to let them try out for the boy’s team. The coach laughs in their faces, saying “girls aren’t as fast as boys, or a strong, or as athletic. This is not me talking, it’s a scientific fact” (Fickman). Outraged, Viola does everything in her power to prove this, as well as many other stereotypes wrong. Viola, played by Amanda Bynes, disguises herself as her brother and try’s out for his schools’ boys’ team. “This transparently cross-dressed performance advances a distinctly conservative perspective on both gender identity and the human subject” (). She’s the Man uses a humorous approach to help viewers understand the gender roles of teenage life when Viola is able to break through the barriers of femininity versus masculinity, disproving stereotypes about romance, athletics, education, and beauty along the way. There are many different stereotypes of femininity and masculinity in the movie, but the main one focused on in the movie is romance and the different ways that each gender enacts the roles of their individual relationships. Main character Viola Hastings is in a relationship with Justin, who is a typical macho man with no respect for women. In society, women are usually stereotypes as timid,......

Conviction of Wrong Man

...Expert Witness Helped Convict Wrong Man A panel of six independent forensic scientists stated, in a report filed in a Houston State court, that crime laboratory supervisor James Bolding helped convict an innocent man of rape in 1987. Because Bolding either lacked basic knowledge of blood typing or gave false testimony, George Rodriguez spent 17 years in prison for a rape that he did not commit. Bolding’s testimony in the case was challenged amid a scandal that led to retesting of evidence in 360 cases; And with the report filed, that number could increase by the thousands, involving 25 years of cases. “The panel concluded that crime laboratory officials might have offered ''similarly false and scientifically unsound'' reports and testimony in other cases, and it called for a comprehensive audit spanning decades to re-examine the results of a broad array of rudimentary tests on blood, semen and other bodily fluids” (Liptak and Blumenthal, 2004). There have been many cases where forensic science and law enforcement experts have provided sworn testimony, documents, or reports intended for the court that contain unreliable or misleading information, findings, opinions, or conclusions. Some are found to have been intentionally offered by the expert in order to secure an unfair or unlawful conviction, via ‘fitting the evidence to the crime’. A state audit of the Houston police department (HPD) crime lab, completed in December 2002, found that HPDs DNA technicians......

Is Cheating Wrong?

...The act of cheating is considered taboo in society as we know it today. Cheating on school exams, in sports and in relationships are almost always frowned upon, thus, portraying the “cheater” as the bad guy, and his act morally wrong. When it comes to cheating to get ahead in your education, the only person you are hurting is yourself. For example, a student has to write an essay on a specific topic, but because of a full schedule including sports and music lessons, along with poor time management, the student finds himself sitting at the computer the night before the essay is due, completely drawing a blank when it comes to beginning the essay. It is easy to go on the internet, search for the topic and then find several websites dedicated to essays on that topic. The student using another person’s essay as their own will only hurt them in the long run. They may be caught and punished for plagiarizing, as there is a multitude of software available to detect plagiarizing. A teacher gives the assignment to measure the student’s understanding, ability, and comprehension of the actual act of writing the essay. It is with these assignments that the student can learn and perfect good writing habits, a skill that is taken with them into adult life. Cheating in sports has been happening for a very long time. As far back as 1919, cheating was recorded in the baseball World Series; the cheaters then became infamous for their cheating behavior rather than their performance on the......

The Man

...Essays are generally scholarly pieces of writing giving the author's own argument, but the definition is vague, overlapping with those of an article, a pamphlet and a short story. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism, political manifestos, learned arguments, observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. Almost all modern essays are written in prose, but works in verse have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope's An Essay on Criticism and An Essay on Man). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Thomas Malthus's An Essay on the Principle of Population are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays are often used by universities in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. A photographic essay is an attempt to cover a topic with a linked series of photographs; it may or may not have an accompanying text or captions. An essay has been...

Universally Wrong

...UNIVERSALLY WRONG Dionne Harris SOC120: Introduction to Ethics & Social Responsibility (ACG1318A) Instructor: David Jung May 13, 2013 The idea of what is moral has been a debated question for many years. With all the different cultures and beliefs in the world, there is no real understanding of what should be considered wrong as a whole. In the article “Some Moral Minima”, Lenn Goodman argues that there are a number of areas that he considers morally wrong for the universe. My belief is that there are areas such as murder, rape, terrorism and physical abuse that are just wrong period; however in certain circumstances those areas may be justified. In the article Goodman states that everyone should be free to live without being subject to inhumane treatment (Goodman 2010). Many cultures hide behind relativism as a justification for committing immoral acts. According to our textbook relativism is “the view that one's beliefs are conditioned by one's culture, society and or community"(Mosser,2010). A person’s background and up bringing shapes the way that individual views morality. Goodman believes murder is wrong because ‘it destroys a human subject (Goodman 2010). I have to agree that Murder is wrong although there are a few ways to justify certain forms of murder. . Regardless of what you believe, no one has the right to maliciously take another person’s life. Goodman goes on to say that war is wrong but it is necessary in order to protect the life of......

...Maddon used to mouth it with a simpering mockery, as if it pointed to the kid being something less than a man. I must admit though that the name fitted him, for Cecil was the least likely lumberjack I've seen in over twenty-five years in lumber camps. Though we knew he was intelligent enough, and a man too, if smaller than most of us, we all kidded him, in the good natured way a bunkhouse gang will. Maddon however always lisped the kid's name as if it belonged to a woman. Moose Maddon was as different from Cecil as it is possible for two human beings to be and still stay within the species. He was a big moose of a man, even for a lumber stiff, with a round flat unshaven face that looked down angrily and dourly at the world. Cecil on the other hand was hardly taller than an axe-handle, and almost as thin. He was about nineteen years old, with the looks of an inquisitive sparrow behind his thick horn-rimmed glasses. He had been sent out to the camp for the summer months by an distant relative who had a connection with the head office down in Vancouver. That summer we were cutting big stuff in an almost inaccessible stand of Douglas fir about fifty miles out of Nanaimo. The logs were catted five miles down to the river where they were bunked waiting for the drive. Cecil had signed on as a whistle punk, but after a few days of snarling the operation with wrong signals at the wrong time and threatening to hang the rigging slingers in their own chokers, he was transferred to......

Abortion Is Wrong

... Babies Lives Matter Kristen Trussell Medtech College Instructor Bouzouma EN140 25 January 2016   Abortion has become a highly discussed topic in our country from people believing its right and others believing its wrong. Annually, an estimated 43.8 million babies die from abortion worldwide (World Health Organization/Guttmacher Institute, published 2012). That is approximately one baby being aborted every two seconds In many states, abortion has been banned after 16 weeks of pregnancy and many doctors will not perform an abortion unless of a medical reason. Some small clinics such as Planned Parenthood will perform these abortions. When going to these clinics there are pro-life and pro-choice groups usually standing out front with signs. Pro-life groups favor greater restrictions on abortion. They argue that a fetus is a human being with the right to live, so abortion is murder. Pro-choice groups argue that a woman has certain reproductive rights especially the right to choose whether to carry a fetus or not. My own is that I think if there is nothing wrong with the fetus when the woman goes to her ultrasound appointments and nothing shows up and there’s no medical problems with the woman then she should keep it. One of the most common reasons a woman chooses to abort is because they want to delay a pregnancy because they are too young. However, in some cases a woman becomes pregnant from being rapped and decides to abort the baby. They do not want to live with the......

The Man

...unhappy, God's unjust; If man alone engross not Heav'n's high care, Alone made perfect here, immortal there: Snatch from his hand the balance and the rod, Rejudge his justice, be the God of God. In pride, in reas'ning pride, our error lies; All quit their sphere, and rush into the skies. Pride still is aiming at the blest abodes, Men would be angels, angels would be gods. Aspiring to be gods, if angels fell, Aspiring to be angels, men rebel: And who but wishes to invert the laws Of order, sins against th' Eternal Cause. V. Ask for what end the heav'nly bodies shine, Earth for whose use? Pride answers, " 'Tis for mine: For me kind Nature wakes her genial pow'r, Suckles each herb, and spreads out ev'ry flow'r; Annual for me, the grape, the rose renew, The juice nectareous, and the balmy dew; For me, the mine a thousand treasures brings; For me, health gushes from a thousand springs; Seas roll to waft me, suns to light me rise; My foot-stool earth, my canopy the skies." But errs not Nature from this gracious end, From burning suns when livid deaths descend, When earthquakes swallow, or when tempests sweep Towns to one grave, whole nations to the deep? "No, ('tis replied) the first Almighty Cause Acts not by partial, but by gen'ral laws; Th' exceptions few; some change since all began: And what created perfect?"—Why then man? If the great end be human happiness, Then Nature deviates; and can man do less? As......
